Right now i'm making a music quiz (for the age 12 to 17) and i'm searching for music.

This made me wonder, are there songs everyone should know. There were some that crossed my mind.

Smells like team spirit - Nirvana
Ironic - Alanis Morriset
time after time - Cindy Lauper
Wonderwall - Oasis
Fast car - Tracy Chapman
Seven nation army - The white stripes

Some from every genre, what are your thoughts on this?

Nirvana is the only one I agree with.

EDIT:

Here's some better ones.

Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Back in Black - AC/DC
It's a Wonderful Life - Louis Armstrong

This topic has already been done very recently: Link

Here was mine:

Disappoint (Funker Vogt RMX) by Assemblage 23.

The intro may be a little long for some so give it a chance.

He's making a Music quiz of songs people problem know (And if they don't, they're out of touch), not a 'Must Listen To' thread.

Unless I am missing something.

I'd name dozens of classic orchestral songs, but I can't name any of them. They're always called something overly complicated. "Mozart's 9th symphony in E Minor with a bit of piano but not as much as that other verson, you know the one I mean." and such.

I'll throw out the obvious one...

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin.

Seriously, how can anyone not know that?
Also...

Sweet Child O Mine - Guns N' Roses
Enter Sandman - Metallica
Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden
Paranoid - Black Sabbath

Old, yes, but undoubtedly classics, and should all be known.

I'm looking for classics. Songs that even 12 year olds should have heard.

Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Back in Black - AC/DC
It's a Wonderful Life - Louis Armstrong

Really nice and agreed.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze
Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Judy Garland - Somewhere over the rainbow
Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma/Ave Maria
The Three Tenors - O Sole Mio
Wagner - Ride of The Valkyries
Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture

Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel
You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon
Homeward Bound by Simon & Garfunkel
Diamonds On The Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon
Hearts And Bones by Paul Simon
El Condor Pasa by Simon & Garfunkel

You know what? Just go look up either Paul Simon or Simon & Garfunkel and you can pretty much be sure that I approve of what you find. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel are amazing musicians, although Art didn't have much of a career after Paul Simon decided to go solo, but his work with Paul Simon and Paul's solo work are nearly all masterpieces and are mainly the reason that modern music makes me want to shove a powerdrill in my ears cause nothing will ever measure up to Paul Simon's greatness.

Journey - Don't Stop Believin'

The story behind this follows: I was at a Dropping Daylight/Sick Puppies show a couple years ago in Burlington, VT. My buddies and I were standing near the front but when Dropping Daylight busted out the Journey cover NOBODY (save me and my two buddies) sang along. Everyone just stared at them dumbfounded. I was shocked. The cover was perfect (except that Seth couldn't play the solo and his brother had to do it on the keyboards) and there was no mistaking the song. Clearly the audience was just a bunch of jabrones. Sebastian (the keyboardist) came up to me after the show and said "dude, if it weren't for you three belting it out, that cover wouldn't have worked."

Journey has about 20 songs everyone knows, either actively or passively.

Personally, I believe everyone LOVES Journey, whether they wan to admit it or not. Everyone at that concert with you was just in denial.

Great music and classic, well for me it is. But i'm afraid that not a lot of kids under 20 will know it.

Same goes for Journey.

Maybe i should use it to teach them something.

I sincerely hope you're right.
