Just about anything by mars volta or radiohead. While the band may be doing something awesome or cool in it's own right the song will never live up to the epicness of the original.
So true.

I also applaud your taste, Radiohead and TMV are my two favourite bands, ever.

Speaking of covers, Weezer recently covered Paranoid Android and it was interesting. Interesting because they didn't go out of their way trying to emulate Radiohead song, rather, they tried to play it as if it was Weezer material. I personally thought it was rather cute.

Absolutely anything by Coheed and Cambria. You just can't replicate Claudio Sanchez's voice. Ever.
Unless you have Geddy Lee do it.

Honestly I can only thing of Stevie Ray Vaughan. You cant replace that certain twang that he had in his voice

Anything Queen,Bowie, or AC/DC. The insturments and stuff sure but the way the vocals are on each, I don't think you could ever make a good cover.
A lot of people think that Nirvana did a pretty good cover of Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World.

Anything by tool for me.
When I saw this thread, I immediately thought to post this same thing, but then I remembered this amazing string quartet that covers rock songs as classical music. It's not really a cover; kind of a tribute, I guess? I don't know what you'd call it. Here:

For absolutely un-coverable songs, I'd have to say Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Definitely still a cover by definition. Just heavily reinterpreted. The best covers are ones that reinterpret the original, rather than attempts to replicate it. Replication will always fall short because the covering artist won't ever sound exactly the same as the original, and trying to do so is pointless anyhow because it makes itself redundant.

Anything by Michael Jackson or the Beatles. Yes, I know they've been covered plenty of times. And you know what? It always sucks.
Obviously if you're someone who doesn't like the genre you probably won't love it, but it is an amazing metal cover IMO (Random fact: the band is from Greece).

It's nothing amazing like Inactive Messiah's Beat It, but I think they did a pretty good job on it.

My answer: Everything is able to be covered. It just depends on the artist and their choice of song and how they wish to convey it that determines weather it's a good one or not.

EDIT: I guess if I had to come up with a song I'd go with I Wish I Had An Angel by Nightwish because Tarja's voice is magnificent balanced by Marco's rough vocals. Any one else doing to song would sound like crap IMO.

BIG EDIT:[/u] THIS is my answer now!
Not only is it in Norwegian, but the sound of the song itself is so irregular that I don't think it'd work done by anyone else

Bohemian Rhapsody, I'd have to see.
Because the original is just so great, a cover wouldn't come anywhere close, even if it was good on its own merits.
It's like Deus Ex and Invisible War.
Both great games, but IW had the misfortune of coming after Deus Ex, and so was seen as bad.

Covers are a funny subject. You have one person that gets upset about every slight change from the original and others (like me) who think a cover should never sound completely like the original. But then they call it an interpretation as if an interpretation was anything but a cover. Ugh!
I think a cover should always be a tribute first and foremost, like the artist or person doing the song is doing a hommage to the original writer. Wether or not someone likes the original or the cover better is just a matter of taste in the end anyway. Music is pretty much the most subjective thing in the world.
Therefor to me, a song can always be covered. Someone will always like that cover better.

Please don't be too pissed (especially at me for posting it ^_^). It's not a very good cover of it though.

I heard it earlier today and they did it justice, although I think it worked because he had a simillar yet unique voice and the song didn't really rely that much on Bowies voice.

Funny you should mention that because I literally just downloaded "The man who Sold the World" today by Nirvana and I am in love with it.

OT: I'm looking through my iPod now trying to find a song, but in all seriousness I keep finding songs that I want people to try to cover.

Somebody get on that thread right now.

just about anything by the Butthole Surfers, not that anyone would ever want to but they're too unique of a band to cover...<.<
I've seen a couple of bands cover Human Cannonball, in fact I saw a great folk/blues cover of John E. Smokes.

All songs are coverable, but not all covers are as good as the original. I don't think I'll ever hear anyone do Walk on Guilded Splinters better than Dr John but I'm sure I'll hear a lot of people try.

And I applaud them for it. It takes talent to cover a song and make it good but

Pink actually did a pretty good cover during her last tour. Wasn't as good as the original of course but came pretty close.

I'd have to say Stone Sour and Slipknot. Corey Taylor's voice is amazing on so many levels, not just how he controls it but also how emotional he sounds. Also I'll say Time of Your Life and Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day. Billy Joe Armstrong's voice is just perfect for those songs and you just can't get the generic Green Day sound.

Rage against the machine, you can't match Zach's intensity no matter how hard you tried. His grating, defiant voice fits perfectly with the music and it would be hard to find someone who could spit out those lyrics whom you would take seriously
