I searched, and there was nothing specifically along these lines.

What song, in terms of sheer musical brilliance, or amazing lyrics, or a fantastic combination of the two, do you feel everyone should hear before they die? Not in terms of "your favourite song" but in terms of what it offers to other people.

I fear that my contributions to this thread will be insignificant, but I have two, by the same band - Rise Against. Okay, so maybe I'm a bit shallow and hypocritical, but that's just me. :p

An acoustic song which deals with war. The ending hits me and the lyrics remind me why COD4 is as close to war as I'll ever get

I just love this song. The final song on their fourth album, not only is it a good conclusion but the lyrics speak to me.

Offer up your own ideas, preferably better ones than mine -_-

EDIT: embedded now
I had hero of war suggested to me a while back and I agree it's a pretty damn fine song but I'm still unsure of what the overall message is of the song ,excuse me if I'm being denser than a black-hole, but in my opinion the last verse sort of suggests that he would do it all again. Your thoughts?

1. Snuff, by slipknot. I know, a slipknot song, but it's amazing. Touching lyrics, amazing vocals, and the melody between instruments makes a great song. Different to their screamo stuff (which I also like).

2. The Exo-genisis symphony, by Muse. Simply incredible, Matt Bellamy is a genius composer, singer and piano player. Meaningful lyrics, politics, nuclear holocausts, new worlds, chances.

I would have to say Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and/or the aria sung in the Fifth Element. Both are epic.

I totally agree with Hero Of War, it's written in such a brilliant way, instead of simply complaining about war, it deals with the terrifying experiences from the POV of a soldier. It really reveals in vivid and graphic detail the horrors and truths of war, it's a wonderful song by an incredible band

In that order.

EDIT: and 4 seconds after posting, Don Henley's "Boys of summer" started on BBC radio 2.

Listen to that too.

I recommend people to hear Ghost Prototype I - Measurement of Thought by Scar Symmetry sometime. It contains one of the most awesome guitar solos ever created.

Also, pretty much the entire A Predator's Portrait album by Soilwork.

Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. More than just a "rock classic", It's just everything that's good about music in general shoved into one song.

The last verse, though it's not made entirely clear, I assume when the lyrics say "I brought home that flag / Now it gathers dust / But it's the flag that I love / It's the only flag I trust" it is referring to the 'flag white as snow' in the previous verse - quite the opposite, the soldier saying he now believes in peace. That's my take on it anyway. Still an excellent song.

Is this basically just a "BEST SONG EVER" thread in a new hat?
It's looking that way. A big excuse for everyone to gather and shout out their favorite songs. Not that I'm complaining - I spat out a song as well, and I love sharing music. I just get the impression that no-one is gonna listen to anything anyone else stuck in here, and the only discussion will be between people who like the same thing (See the King Crimson lot up there)but what the hell, right?
Well, I can't really stop it turning out that way, but my original intentions were to find songs that were really powerful or effective or just really really damn good.
The more I look at it the more I realise that all I've done is created a "favourite songs" thread...how foolish of me.

By the way, I've edited the first post with an important message: spoiler tags from now on, guys.
