A friend of mine and I got into a big discussion today about ourselves and the world around us, how the cards have been dealt, our place in the world, self acceptance, that sort of thing. It was quite a mess, honestly! But it was a good talk, one that helps put ourselves in perspective compared to each other. After the discussion, I got to listening to some music to help keep the thoughts flowing a bit. And I ended up coming across a song that I think I can relate to internally quite well. An unlikely (And very gamer-y choice), but one I like for a lot of reasons.


Lyrics

I like this song a lot, because the game it came from has a message of accepting who you are and ensuring you don't lose yourself no matter what happens, because if you simply lower your head and go along with everyone else and don't stand up for who you are as a person, then your individuality risks getting shut out entirely. You no longer become the person who know you are and could be proud of, all for the sake of the status quo and benefit of those who don't accept dissenting opinions, even if it's for the better. I think the song communicates that decently well, and the game's message and storytelling spoke to me quite strongly

In the honor of my main being announced for Smash, I'll post something that makes me happy.


I can literally listen to this for hours and it will always get me pumped. Nintendo are the absolute masters of this sometimes. They know they are trying to reach the world. We don't all speak the same langauge, but we all have the pull at our hearts when we can hear... feel the excitement of competition. The bond we feel when we see fellow supporters. I don't even like sports and I've always felt sad that I don't feel that kinship when I see people walking around with Jerseys.

Listening to this song was one of the first times I ever felt like I was apart of the Group. It means something to me. That for once, I wasn't different.

What I care about is that Optimus Fucking Prime kicked all the ass, and Rodimus Goddamn Prime was born to this 80's hair metal anthem. The it made a glorious comeback at the end of the third season as Optimus Prime returns to life and saves the universe from madness, not with force of arms but with wisdom. Gee, and how oddly fucking poignant that feels right about now.

This is a live performance of it, including a moment where they Push the Button. Which just gets me so much, not sure why.


Timestamp for the part that is Blue Sky Action is roughly 1:40:27. It's the halfway point in the song where they pull the girl on stage that gets me. Just her pure joy at that moment is infectious as hell.

This one just gives me chills, the sing-a-long is amazing



But their songs, and it's general feel and vibe, especially the live performance, resonates with what I'd call my general "philosophy" of life. Of just sharing and expressing joy to everyone. To forget about differences and enjoy the short time we have in this world, and to be happy for others who are enjoying their lives as well.

This song...is amazing to listen to at night, especially if it's late, and there is rain, and other ambient sounds. It's this beautiful piece of sonic nostalgia for me, even though it has nothing to do with my personal youth. It just resonates with the undertones of a quiet melancholy and longing. It often makes me think of the scene from the original Bladerunner, where Deckard is on his balcony, drinking booze, and just looking out at the world around him. In the middle of a massive city, but utterly isolated. Though the image in my head is that of a couple at a similar window, looking out at a cyberpunk cityscape, bathed in neon that shimmers in the rain. It just hits a really strong note with me, and I usually feel much more calm after hearing it, sort of like it's a salve for an ache inside me.

Yeah, though the lines that get me are "Arise Rodimus Prime" and then "Now light our darkest hour!"

I'm a sucker for legacy/passing the torch stories, and to hear the Ben Kenobi-esque ghost voice of Optimus Prime, talking to Rodimus through the Matrix....yeah, that just plowed through my kid brain. In fact, I've recently come to the conclusion, that that film, and that scene, are probably the original examples of a Legacy story, that caused it to be such a huge personal, emotional thing for me. I was a kid, seeing that film in the theaters, being wrecked by the death of my favorite autobots. Then, to basically realize "oh, they're all basically downloaded into that Matrix, so it's an ACTUAL kind of afterlife for them. Wow, that's some crazy combined knowledge there!" Yeah that just floored me as a kid.

For trance inducing songs, this one works really well for me. This whole album is good for that really, but this opening track really helps let my mind switch off from random thought loops, and drift out into a relaxed state.

I haven't listened to The Orb in forever, it was great studying music back in the day.

I had heard heard (and quite liked) Nobody Speak which he did with Run The Jewels around the time it released, and had listened to both Building Steam and Midnight of it before the full thing, so I knew I would like the whole album at the very least. When I actually listened to it, I was blown away by, what is now my favorite "at night vibes" song (well, the whole album really, but this one in particular);

(I've now picked up a few more of DJ Shadow's other albums)

I think if were strictly talking positive vibe music in tune with your personality here's a couple

Netherfriends Uptown boys. I think I sometimes have to remind myself not to sweat the small things. Adversity I can deal with. Im the kind of person that calms you down and sorts you out when your car is on fire. Life shattering events Im pretty chill about, but often myself brought low by a very just general sense of depression. Uptown boys is one of those songs I listen to when its not so much that I need cheering up but need to stop ruminating on things. You could assume it's a song about drugs, but it can also be interpreted as a song about standing above your own dark clouds.


Similar in tone I dig this song by Kool & Kass. Quitely simply an anthem to not giving a fuck


Websterx - skin is a song about accepting yourself, focusing on what you're proud of and ignoring the people who treat you differently. I think anyone whos had to overcome bigotry can relate.
