He seems fond of the word ugly. I'm surprised he didn't start complaining about eye color.
I'm going come out and say it, he's probably not the fan he thinks he is if he can't appreciate good character growth. Sonic's like Pepsi to Mario's Coke, he keeps changing to suit the demographic.
I agree though, us Sonic Fans are notorious for doing stuff like this. I'm still a fan. The only complaint I've ever had on his physical design was the Ninja Run. Everything just seems to me like natural growth of a character over time.
My favorite design is from the Sonic CD animated cut scenes, but that's just me. I'm fine with his new design so long as the game is playable.
I don't see the problem with the new Sonic designs. It's meant to show his sleekness and aerodynamics which is something you need when you are running at over 100MPH.
I'm sad that you think we are the lowest types of fans but there are some very extreme Sonic fans out there giving us a bad name.
He also seems to forget that Sonic 3's Sonic which is retro was different than the Sonic 1 & 2 designs. They made him a little chubbier which I'm glad they eventually worked away from.
Sonic 1 & 2.
Sonic 3
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2
Next-Gen Sonic
I personally think they've improved on him over time.
Um I take offense to you calling Sonic fans are the lowest types of fans there are. Simply because I am a HUGE Sonic fan. This person however is incredibly stupid.

Sonic has been a character whose look has fit the time he was in.
Back n tha day a lot of things were, how you say, "Cartoony" and Sonic fit that perfectly.
Now things have been a lot "Sharper" and streamlined, and new Sonic fits that pretty well.
So i like the old Sonic because he fit his time, and i like the newer Sonics because they also fit their time.

It's never the majority, just the loudest. They do tend to pinch a nerve though when ever they open their mouths.

I'm going to offer an alternative, because I don't think it was aerodynamics that promoted the design change. It was mainly the transition to 3D.
Once Sonic hit 3D, the 3 Spike design fell, well, flat. And like in Sonic 3D Blast, the Five spike design that caught on looked poor on the 3D sprite. It was too short. Since then the character has sported many different lengths of spikes as Sonic Team, trying to get a title out once a year, probably had little time to find the perfect length until recently. Too busy making those long levels I guess. I think they have a nice length going now though.

The thinner physique I'll agree shows more athleticism, and the fact that he's taller (not questioning center of gravity) definantly makes it seem like he can run faster. So I'll agree with you there.
Though as much as I love the current Sonic and think it's one of the best versions of him, this one's still one of my favorites.
I think it's the way it's drawn. Both have their charm and are solid designs though. People who complain just can't accept the fact that things change or that it's not Sonic's design that's causing him to falter.

I completely agree with you, though when i said "streamlined" i didn't mean it in the way you describe actually.
I meant it as an observation of the style that's very common nowadays.
Though like i said, i do agree, and you raise some points that i had never even thought about!
Especially the Spikes.
And i also love the Design for Sonic from Sonic CD as well.
It was just drawn cool IMO.
Hey, that's me your talking about. I don't really know what that guy is bitching about because Sonic looks fine. Admittedly, he is getting skinnier and his spikes droopier, but it's too far of a stretch to call him ugly. The Dreamcast design is the best in my opinion.
OP: I find your entire post to be somewhat irritating. I'm reading it with an open mind, but so much of it could be interpreted as flaming. Also, starting a thread as a personal attack against someone another member who you consider to be an "idiot" seems to be an abuse of posting privileges.
OT: I happen to be a Sonic fan and I think, nevermind your exact question is unclear.
I'mma add another vote to the Sonic CD cutscenes look. They had him streamlined just enough that he wasn't the pudgy (albeit nostalgic) little blue ball of yesteryear, but not the post-evolution Sonic with long stick limbs and spines that droop to his ass.
Um I take offense to you calling Sonic fans are the lowest types of fans there are. Simply because I am a HUGE Sonic fan. This person however is incredibly stupid.
I think he was referring to the rabid Sonic Fans, the one that just never stop complaining, even after their demands have been met. You know, the kind of Sonic fan that needs to shut the hell up about everything?
I'm going come out and say it, he's probably not the fan he thinks he is if he can't appreciate good character growth. Sonic's like Pepsi to Mario's Coke, he keeps changing to suit the demographic.
This is a good point. Sonic keeps changing to meet the supposed demographic, and yet is never as popular as mario, just as Pepsi (billed as the "cool" drink) gets it arse handed to it in sales by Coke, the "classic" drink. An amusing aside is that in Russia, Pepsi is seen as the "old" drink as it's associated with the old USSR, whereas Coke is the "new" and "hip" drink.

Personally, I like Pepsi. Though this isn't about Coke vs. Pepsi or Mario vs. Sonic, coincidentally both Red vs Blue scenarios. Nor is this about Sonic's ties to Communism, which again is interesting because you'd never expect the Blue Blur to be a spy for the Red Menace. It's almost too Perfect.
It's not about that spiney, hedgehog taste. Cause as we now, it takes a while for people to grow accustomed to a New Pepsi logo; but it eventually catches on.

We've been waiting years and years for the new sonic look to catch on. There hasn't been a decent Sonic game on any of the 3d consoles (you could maybe argue sonic adventure on the DC, but yea)
Why doesn't he complain about something that matters? You know like the fact that there hasn't been a good sonic game since he made the jump to 3D. He personally looks the same to me, he's a blue hedgehog.
