Sonic Generations... Doesn't Suck?

I'm sure most of you read Penny Arcade, so I was surprised to find a link to a Game Trailers review that actually said it not only didn't suck... it was actually good. Great-ish even. So I went and bought it for 50 bucks last night to see if it could be so. (My hopes weren't high. I've been hurt before.)

I haven't had so much fun in such a long time. I was a Genesis kid, I was a Dreamcast teenager, and if you were a SEGA kid this is YOUR nostalgia game. Finally. IT'S OUR TIME NOW NINTENDO KIDS! BAHAHAHAHAHA! (You guys have no idea how dead we've been inside....)

I was expecting the 2D to play the best, and it is awesome, but I'm actually finding the 3D to be the most fun. They don't punish you for going fast anymore! THEY ACTUALLY FIXED MOST OF 3D SONIC'S ISSUES. It is legitimately fun to speed boost through things. It is a little too easy to get good ranks, the boss fights could be better, and it is a bit short for your money, but it is way longer than the original Sonic games, (which I remember selling for 25-30 dollars back in the day, so make of that what you will). The design of the menus are slick, it handles amazingly well, there are multiple levels within levels, challenge modes, and the story isn't half bad either. Does its job, does it well.

Oh, and those annoying little side characters, (read: everyone who isn't Sonic or Tails), while in the game, are referenced but mostly passed over. That was probably a good move on their part, they don't bother the old school Sonic fans too much and they don't alienate the newer Sonic fans by not having them there. They do make fun of a few of the odder ones though, so that's fun.

If that doesn't convince you, perhaps this will: Sonic eats a chilly dog. IN A SONIC GAME.

I heartily recommend, go pick it up.

(Fingers crossed they add Oil Ocean Zone in on some DLC!)

I don't read Penny Arcade, but I will admit I've heard nothing but good things about this game.

I was considering it, but maybe I'll pick it up.

Is old sonic still voiced by Urkel? :p

I've been waiting for a Sonic Generations thread to pop up (and was considering starting my own).

Indeed, OP, bask and rejoice for there is finally a Sonic game that is simply markedly good instead of "Oh, well, this part is okay, but it had poor level design..." (Granted, I really liked Colors as well, but being on the Wii meant it had much less wide-spread exposure than Unleashed).

Of course, I'm sure that the rabid fanboys will complain about how Sonic's jump is lower and he falls faster than in the original games (because they always need something to complain about), and of course the story is ridiculous (though with how short it actually is, I think the writing can be forgiven). It really did strike me as a throw-back to the glory days of Sonic's youth. And I, for one, find both gameplay styles to be amazing. I had some issues with laggy controls while playing the demo in HD on an HDTV, but playing on my own Standard Definition television, the controls are tight and precise, the level design is wonderful (Modern Sonic's Crisis City was still a *****, but better than the actual game they took it from), the music has made classic Sonic tunes be stuck in my head since I started playing, and I just can't gush enough.

The short and simple version: Sega/Sonic Team found how to make Sonic fun again, and I hope that if they continue making Sonic games they don't stumble into mediocrity again.

I'll probably buy it once someone informs me that the PC port isn't terrible. It's under $30 on PC at greenmangaming.

Unfortunately no. Or, fortunately, depending on your view. The guy looks like a beast now, I'm not sure he could do the voice right.

Oh, and I also found something else a bit ago while playing it. It has a easily unlockable port of the original Sonic the Hedeghog. The whole thing too, not just one or two levels.

The Swede asks what a chilly dog is. Is it a hot dog with chilly on top? Or is it perchance a chilled dog?

He could also have been voiced by Martin Burke, but instead, he wasn't given a voice at all. Which actually makes some of his scenes better... Protip: When you get to Sky Sanctuary, beat Act 2 first.

OT: I was already considering this game, but since I only have a PC, the controls might be a little hard...but I worked around it for Adventure DX (which was pretty damn good), I loved Colours and it's getting at least 8.0 from everyone I've seen review it. Including Jim Sterling, who hated Wii!Colours.

It's a normal hot dog, (whatever kind of meat), with a bun, topped with chili (it's usually spelled chilly dog but it's supposed to be chili), which is usually made up of spices, maybe beans and ground beef. Cheese and peppers optional.

Old Sonic doesn't talk, and new Sonic doesn't talk as much as I'm used to in these newer games. Both Tails have quite a bit to say.

I hope to see more of old Sonic in 3-D games, he's so cute/cool. :)

Yeah, every time people bring up how much recent Sonic games suck I kinda' have to sit there and wonder if they've been paying much attention. I actually really like Unleashed and Colors both. Generations sets the new bar for quality, though. It's a perfect balance between the styles of Genesis, Rush, and Adventure.

Sweet Jesus. Why have the Americans kept this seemingly delicious junk food from us???

I've been disappointed by Sonic ever since it moved away from the Genesis. Dare I really have expectations this time?

I almost wish I liked Sonic to get excited to. It does look interesting, but I never did enjoy those old Sonic games on Sega Genesis.

Well, if I ever see it for 20$ at Walmart, I'll pick up a copy.

Wait, there are new sonic fans? Really ? People are fans of the new shit? Really?

OT: glad to hear sonic has been , uhhh , revitalised? I honestly thought he was dead and gone while devs were just playing with his corpse. Well i guess someone told sonic to "Rise from your grave" ( if you don't know what game that is from you not a real sega kid). Oh well i might pick ot up when it hits 20$-30$ , kinda strapped for cash especially since xmas is near by. Let's hope sonic doesn't die prematurely this time.

Yeah, far as we heard Sonic games are great now. Contrary to current belief though, not everyone always thought 3D Sonic games sucked. Remember when Adventure 1 and 2 were new? Somewhat flawed, but pretty damn sweet nonetheless. Things just went downhill when Shadow the Hedgehog and '06 came along. Then everyone decried anything that didn't have to do with the Genesis era.

I haven't played the PSWii60 generation, but the general gist is that Unleashed Daytime was on the right track but somewhat flawed, Colors was like Unleashed except it was a beast, and Generations is a beast with metric tons of Nostalgia Fanservice to give us older players major nerdgasms. Oh, and the handheld Sonic Advance/Sonic Rush games were beasts but no one payed them any mind because they weren't on the big consoles. I did play Advance 3 by the way, and it's amazing.

So how long until EternalNothingness jumps into this thread and starts bitching that Sonic wasn't an angsty anti-hero?
