It really does make me sad to hear about this. And from the sounds of the article things have gotten apocalyptic for sonic's fan-communities
http://www.destructoid.com/sonic-the-hedgehog-fanbase-is-now-eating-itself-169978.phtml

Basically it points out how people are nit-picking and 'nerdraging' over the whole shibang that comes with this retro remake, Sonic4, to the extent that entire web based communities have apparently been devolved to troglodytes trolling away like mad ones.

I'm hoping this isn't some kind of web-based zombie apocalypse thing going on here. But it seems like this could happen anywhere at any time.
But what I'm trying to get a discussion out of is this:

Are we safe here from such horrors? And has anyone witnessed this horror first hand?
Does anyone have any respectable (to contrast what was in the given article) on this new game?

Please lets be civil. Tho, I have faith you guys know better~<3

What the hell? Can someone sum up the whole Sonic 4 issue? I read the article and I still don't get it. They're making a new Sonic game and it's like the old one and the fans are mad because....?

Anyway I was always a fan of the Sonic games back in the Genesis days when I was a kid. Loved Sonic and Knuckles. I even liked the Saturday morning cartoon, which has actually held up pretty well over the years. Although Jalleel White, the voice of Sonic in the cartoon seems annoying to me now. The last Sonic game I ever played was the first one they made for the DreamCast which was ok but I wasn't that thrilled with it. To be honest I never had any desire to go back and play them again at all.

A forum community not unlike this descended into a chaotic swarm of trolls since the teaser for sonic 4 was published. And has driven the big boss of that forum to essentially close the place down.

Now I dunno about you, but I would hate to see that happen here ):

Sonic has fans? They're still making new Sonic games?

I troll you not, I really thought that this game series should have been over years ago. I dread to see what they can pull together this time.

I doubt that we'll see something like that here. The Escapist may have its share of fanboys, but they're so diverse that I don't think an event like that could have the community implode upon itself.

I for one am kind of excited about Sonic 4.

Edit: Also, Kuliani is much much more quick with the banhammer than the Sonic fan site's admin was. Apparently she let it rage on for much longer than she should have. So it's poor community administration on their part.

Unlikely. The Escapist's user base is much too diverse to get discussions, flamefests and trollathons about the topic going on a large enough scale to affect the community as a whole. I, for example, couldn't care less - I'll play the game and see if I like it or not, regardless of context.

-EDIT- Damn ninjas. :p

From what I've seen, I'm pleasantly surprised. It seems like they shunned everything since Sonic 3 and went on making the direct sequel. The gameplay looks decidedly old-school and very much like the Sonic games of old that I grew up with on the Mega Drive.

However, that said, I am reluctant to get excited about it. And the fact that it's episodic doesn't help.
