Sonic lost his cool when he tried to be like Mario and go into 3D where he didnt really belong

And then he gained 300000 odd and uninteresting friends (Big...etc etc post S&K)

SEGA always choose to keep trying to keep him up with Mario....but never did it right and spent most of their time and love on the floor being beaten....

(IMHO They need to make JSRF 2 or something)

After Sega Genesis, when has Sonic not disappointed? It's really unfortunate because I have fond memories of that game, it was one of my first.

I haven't bought a sonic game since Shadow The Hedgehog, and I'm damn proud of that fact.

Unfortunately (at least in my opinion) sonic never really had long lasting appeal, and was only created to compete with mario, who translated much better into 3D

The old 2D games weren't bad though.

I still think its unfair to compare the new ones with the old ones if youre gona coat the later in the impenetrable nostalgia cream.

I'm a forgiving person. A beloved franchise can be forgiven one or two bad games. We all forgave Mario for Sunshine after all. However, there is a difference between "a few" bad games and dozens of absolutely terrible games in a row. This is where Sonic is right now. After sunshine, Mario came back with galaxy, a game that was actually good. Sonic on the other hand has had at least 10 games released since the death of SEGA Genesis to come up with something halfway decent and has failed miserably EVERY TIME. At this point it would take a metacritic score of 95+ to make me even consider touching another Sonic game. Sonic is done. They should have stopped making Sonic games years ago and left him alone in our minds as a beloved memory of a nostalgic time rather than a "how not to" guide for aspiring developers.

So I just downloaded the demo for Sonic Generations, and I'm rather unimpressed. The demo only has one 2D Sonic map (maybe the 3D maps are so good they don't want to spoil us?) based on Green Hills, and already some issues are kinda apparent.

With all the environment 3D it can sometimes be hard to tell what's a platform and what's background, the enemies don't really stand out that well, but thankfully you can at least spin dash by holding down jump. But surprisingly no spin jumps ala Sonic 3. Feels like Sega is going to miss the mark again......

Anyone else give it a try yet?
I had exactly the same problem it was horrific plus the jumping in some bits were retarded.

So it is practically 700mb FOR 2 EFFING MINUTES OF GAMEPLAY wtf; seriously all it is is for nostalgia and hipsters to go oh look its so totally sonic back in the day.

to add insult to injury I had people on my facebook going;

I can safely say that Sonic Generations will be a must have game for any Sonic fans. For Non-Sonic fans i would recomend that you at least try the/a demo

and

the sonic generations demo was good..yet disappointing :/

I just felt like sega farted in my face p.s. Sega learn to innovate not copy paste shit because that's all that demo was

Let me think...1. Sonic Adventure/DX, 2. Sonic Adventure 2/Battle, 3. Sonic Heroes, Shadow doesn't count because Sonic was a side-bar, 4. Sonic '06, 5. Sonic Unleashed, and 6. Sonic Colours, the last of which was very well received.
Unless you're counting handhelds too, which are actually very excellent 2D Sonic games with sub-par stories. Hyperbole is not your forte.

Oh, and I guess OT: I haven't actually hated any of the Sonic games, and I unironically enjoy both the Genesis Sonic games (I never found them to be difficult or labyrinthine in design, either) and the 3D Sonic games (Which can be difficult or labyrinthine in design, '06). So I'm quite looking forward to this new title.

Of course you didn't love it. What kind of Sonic fan would you or anyone be if you didn't shit all over any attempt to return the series to its olden style while not completely carbon-copying it?*

*huge generalization, yo ;) but seriously, too many people are gonna fall under that camp.

On topic: I don't like Sonic. Not even old Sonic. I simply am not good enough for that kinda game. I'm gonna download the demo tomorrow though out of curiosity.

I played it an am in love with it, Sega has really been getting sonic right lately, with Sonic Colours and Sonic 4 (Though episode 2 is taking its sweet time coming out) and this. They are just plain fun and look really nice too which is a good thing, even if you are speeding through the scenery. Definitely getting this game day one.

I did fall through the floor in the demo though on this one spinny dealio because I spin dashed before using it or something, hope they iron that bit out.

No, I haven't, nor will I.

Sonic was great back in the olden times, when graphics were 8-bit and the drowning music terrified you.

Ever since he's gone 3D....... do I really need to finish?
Actually Sonic started on a 16-bit system, on the genesis.

OT: After playing Sonic Unleashed I gave up on the hedgehog. I just don't care anymore what happens to him. The Sonic Team is filled with idiots who messing up with Sonic.

Probably for that space is for the stupid 20 day limit. Which confuses me so much. In 20 days I don't think anyone will care anymore.

What really worries me though is that they don't have the 3D stage on there. 2D is going to be passable no matter what, but half the game and more effort and game play is going into

To be quite honest...I want Sonic Adventure 3.
I've been saying this since Heroes. It looks like they're sticking with this charge and boost/extremely linear thing, and while that's good and the only thing that's worked this generation, it's not Adventure material, so I don't expect that anytime soon.

Anyway, who's surprised by this? The last good Sonic game was Sonic Robo Blast 2, and that was a freeware game made by fans.

First, yes, of course I'm under the sway of nostalgia. She is a beautiful lady, and I cannot resist her siren song. I'll always love the games I played as a kid, nothings going to change that.

Second, that doesn't mean I automatically hate the new 3D games either. I play them, give them a try, and find that I don't like them. That's why I'm not playing any new Sonic games, because I've played the ones that come before them, and do not enjoy them.

Third... are you agreeing with me or saying I'm biased? No offense, but your post is a little hard to interpret. On one hand you same I'm just being nostaglic, on the other you saying you're not having fun either, so... I'm a little confused. Sorry.
What I mean to say is that I think you're being nostalgic to a fault. The old games weren't perfect; in fact, they weren't even that good, most of the time. I feel like you and many, many others are ignoring obvious gameplay flaws for the sake of nostalgia.

Well, to some degree, yes. Nostalgia does that. But, while the old Sonic games had their problems, when you're 8 years old and just discovering games for the first time, you tend not to notice gameplay problems.

And while I do agree that there are problems with the older sonic games, I still think that they're better than the new 3d ones.

He went downhill since Sonic Heroes. The Sonic Team that worked on Sonic Adventure 1, 2 and Phantasy Star Online were all awesome.

Sonic Heroes was the glancing shot, Shadow the Hedgehog was the wound and Sonic '06 was the final nail in the coffin.
...and then the coffin got re-opened (THANK GOD!) with Sonic Colors. Seriously, it was good! And so was Generations.
