I think I am the only PS3 owner that is laughing at this more than being angry. They just had a tech guy weld a PS2 to a TV and raise the price. I love it.
Nah, I'm with you on this one. This has gotta be Sony trolling the entire world.

Besides, making a crappy PSTV2 does not mean that they're not still working on getting backwards-compatibility going for the PS3; it just means that they had a cheap thing that they could start selling now.

I'd buy one for the hell of it just because it's going to sell terribly and in 50 years it would be a collector's item.

Just try to get a 22" Sony TV with a built in DVD player for less than £200. Most other brands push toward the £200 mark for combi TVs. I'm by no means a Sony fanboy (IMO their TVs are ridiculously overpriced compared to other brands) but £200 is a great price for what you're actually getting.

I already have an old PS3 that can play PS2 games anyway.

It seems silly though, all that wasted effort they could put into the PS3s.

Ugh, i can't get behind this idea when the new 3.50 update made me backup usb pad a new door stop. I understand the reasons behind it but it annoys me because i know they won't bring back the usb functionality for 3rd party products because of jailbreakers and teh Haxzors.

Cool idea, belongs on ps3, song are running for biggest pillock contest with activision.

Good thing ps2 games are cheap now i suppose.

This is no recourse to a Canadian with a 60GB launch version, with no ps2, and with a large library of ps2 games living in constant fear of the console breaking.

I now understand why people refer to Sony as such: $ony.

After realizing that PS2's were still selling despite the PS3's release, they discontinued the backwards compatible systems.

Thus forcing people to look elsewhere (original) for their PS2 thrills.

Now they decide to release a gimmicky *television* enabling people to play the games as well.

Does anyone else see the Sony executives twirling their mustaches while rolling on piles of money and slapping each other on the back?

I have both consoles plugged in my tv set, so this means nothing to me.i guess this is cool news for those that dont have the previous console.

I'm probably the only one who wishes this TV could play original PS1 discs too. I haven't finished Legend of Dragoon for example...and I am reluctant to buy Final Fantasy VII from the PS-Store since I have the physical disc. It's a moot point though...only available in the UK? I have no PAL region games.

God dammit. Even their fucking high-end console won't play the games of the previous console (which, as I remember, was one of the main criticisms leveled at the Atari 5200; what happened here? Where are the riots, guys?) and they're making a fucking tiny ass TV with a PS2 built in? And one that's pretty bonkers expensive?

Yeah, thanks a bunch, fuckers. This piece of news made my day. Couldn't be happier with you guys.

Stupid idea. Anyone that has a ps3 already has a hi def tv so it's way cheaper if you buy a used ps2.

PS2 backwards compatibility in a PS3 console only exists today in three discontinued models: the 60GB, 20GB, and original 80GB (with 4 USB ports). As an owner of one of those, I can't tell you how handy it is to own a single system that can play the entire PlayStation library as we know it, from PS1 to the present.
You and me both. Let us laugh at everyone else! Bwahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Really Sony, bring back backwards compatibility for the masses please. For everyone else. In case my PS3 dies beyond repair, I want to be able to find a worthy replacement.

I had an original 60GB PS3 that had backwards compatibility, it died on me 3 years after I got it, and I maintained it perfectly. Got a new one, luckily my PS2 that I got on day 1 is still kicking because otherwise I wouldn't be able to play some of the games. I can't believe they pulled this stupid ass move.

Epic fail?
Who will buy this when PS2s are so cheap anyway.

Here's an idea Sony- why not make the current Playstation console able to play Playstation 2 games...

There is a perfectly valid reason for this, especially given the target market of Europe: SingStar is _still_ fucking HUGE over there.
