Finally! I see the death of the annoying screenlook on the horizon. Plus this opens up some other interesting game options that weren't possible when split-screen was literally a screen split.

Holy shit Sony made something cool... My world is falling apart. This would be a definite pluss if they put it in their next gen consle.
Well, I wouldn't say they made it, since the tech has been around for a while.

I remember there was an adapter back in the PS2 days that would stretch out each half of a splitscreen-image and use similar technology to give each player their own "screen".

Granted, it didn't work very well at all, and both players were stuck with a maximum of 30 fps, but still.
Its not the same thing. This is one screen displaying 2 images at the same time, not exspanding the split screen.
Listen genius; what do you think it does with the two images produced by expanding the two halves to full-screen? It shows them both at the same time, and what image you see depends on what pair of glasses you're wearing.

Hence the "and use similar technology to give each player their own 'screen'" part.

EDIT: I apologize for my 'tude. I should sleep, and I'm not even 100% certain that I remember correctly.

Splitscreens used to be friendship breakers, when I looked at my friends half of the screen to cheat.
Stereoscopic screen sharing will be jawbreakers, when I give my friend a knuckle sandwich to take his 3D glasses and peak at his screen.

If this doesn't turn out to be as big a disappointment as Betamax (Sorry Sony but I'm not going to let go of that one) then I'll probably try this out. It sounds like it might be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

It's not going to be 3D. What happens with 3D televisions using glasses like this is, they're displaying the left eye's image and then the right, really fast. A timing signal tells the glasses which lens to darken, so the correct images go to each eye. This way, you get 3D.

Sony's idea would use all the same technology but with glasses that darken both eyes instead. Then, they simply display the first player's screen in place of the "left eye" image and the second player's screen in place of the "right eye" image. The two glasses are timed to show each player only their screen.

You don't get 3D, but both players do get the full TV's screen width, at 60 Hz.

Wait, but then you would need a different set of special pairs of glasses to pull this off.

But an interesting concept nonetheless.

This sounds very interesting, but I have...slight doubts about its functioning effectiveness. Plus it's gonna be quite expensive.

Okay, I take back what I said about 3D being a fad.

Well, sort of, I still think the 3D part of it is, but this could actually take off.

Ah, I was going to comment on the sound problem. Ninja'd by the opening post... I still wouldn't like having to wear headphones and glasses all the time, but if it lets me actually use my console while my mom is watching TV, I'm fine with it.

If it works well, then hooray, I can finally watch TV without being kicked of in 5 minutes flat! If not, no biggie.

Subliminal messaging...

But that's actually a pretty brilliant idea...
I love your freaking avatar.

OT: Not worth the 5k for the TV and what was it again? 100-200 dollars per glasses? I mean add that all up, 250PS3,60game,50extracontroller,5000TV,400glasses= $5760

I'm so confused how they think that's a selling point when you can build 2 quality gaming PCs for that price. Or you know...get separate PS3s TVs and such for cheaper. Sheesh.

Lame. Now no one will be able to watch the people fight it out or do anything cause it will just be a big blur. Way to make gamers more anti-social guys...

...Ok, now that is a pretty damned cool feature that I certainly didn't think about.
