So, it's like DS Lite - everything from DS, just smaller, and more expensive.

Cooool. How is it, again, an advantage to have a smaller console that is going to sit under the TV or next to it, again? That's like making PCs smaller and expecting people to pay more for the same power.
other than the fact that it's not more expensive...
Last time I checked, Nintendo DS is about 350-400 PLN, Nintendo DS Lite is 600-650 and DSi is 800 PLN.

Thank God I bought mine for 280. Used model, but barely any signs of the previous user, and I saved a lot of money.

I almost broke my desk, Read the damn article again.

Particularly the parts that mention price.
And you read even more carefully.

PS3 Slim = 300 EUR
PS3 Normal = 300 USD.

About 33% more. At least for Europe.
"Speaking of current PS3s, Sony will also be dropping the price tag on "all current PS3s on the shelf" to the same point as the Slim: $299 and 299 Euros."

Same prices =/= one price is more than the other.
Learn to read more carefully.

I think they mean the difference between the two price points.

299 Euros = $422.512

Now, there really isn't much of any excuse not to get a PS3 if you're a middle-class gamer. No more bashing the system about it's price anymore, by the looks of it, even if it is still the most expensive.
You're joking right?

1) It's still freakin' expensive. I'm not going to pay $30 for a loaf of bread, just because it used to cost $40.

2) I've yet to hear of an exclusive PS3 title that really gets me interested in the platform.

3) They killed 90% of the console's value when they removed backwards compatibility.

4) Most middle-class people don't have good enough A/V systems to really care about Blue-ray.

Until Sony releases either a backwards-compatible system (that doesn't have blatant rendering problems) for $199 or cuts the price of the newly announced slim to $99, I for one wouldn't even begin to consider buying the PS3. I'll stick with my trusty PS2 and my PC, thank you very much.

I was just about to quote Funk asking whether the good news had come out yet...

Anyway, this is good news for anyone on the fence about purchasing a PS3. Now all they have to do is add BC back, and I will gladly swoon back into Sony's welcoming arms as a consumer.
Why don't you just buy an old model at it's new price, since most have BC(except the 40gig). The slim wont by the way.

I'm sure if you told us what kind of games you like we could find one up your alley.

Really? didn't you say at the end of this post that you still have a ps2. Why do you give a shit
4) Most middle-class people don't have good enough A/V systems to really care about Blue-ray.
If you're a middle-class gamer, it's not about the graphics it's about the games and even if you are still in denial about it or not, Sony does have quite a few good games and a pretty stellar lineup this year.

Once again, you have a ps2, why do you care about BC? I could understand if your PS2 didn't work anymore, or if Sony refused to service PS2's anymore(which they don't), but now it just seems like you are coming up with unreasonable or illogical reasons to put up a barrier between the PS3 and the gamer.

side note: I got my console on release, after a firmware update that came a long time ago, it has smoothing for the PS2 games and few to no rendering issues.

Wait, which PS3's have backwards compatibility? I was under the impression that there was only one model that had BC that was discontinued

Well fuck, maybe Sony should just give them all away for free.

Last year the 360 shed $100 from its price tag, right around the same time of the year. Now that Sony does it, it's just not enough.

Fuck all, nobody is ever happy on the internet.

I see what you mean, but in the end, they said all PS3's are the same price, in the respective areas. It just looks like somebody was confused that the slim would cost more than the fat when talking about one currency.

The only models with BC were all discontinued, whether they used the Emotion Engine chip directly or software BC. Regardless...

Pray tell, if you already have a PS2, why the fuck do you care about backward compatibility in the first place? The only reason I can think of is the use of virtual memory cards on the hard drive as opposed to using one you probably already have. And 90% of the value? That's a fucking laugh as well. See, I personally am under the impression that the reason for a new system is for NEW games, not old ones for a system you already have. No one bought an Xbox 360 to play Halo 2 for instance.

If you really think that the only appeal of the PS3 was its backward compatibility, then here's a novel idea. You could... just use your PS2 and stop bitching because you don't like the games on this new system that other people happen to like.

It looks to me that when KingKamor said there's "no more reason" to bash it on the basis of price, he meant as compared to the Xbox 360, or even the Wii. Wii + second controller + second nunchuck >= $299. 360 Pro + one year of Xbox Live = $299. PS3 = $299. Whether you like the games or not is a matter of opinion.

EDIT: The backward compatibility on my second-edition PS3 (software rendering) works fine. Only game it doesn't play is Guilty Gear XX, but at least the PS2 is there to alleviate that problem.

On topic, the PS3 Slim... I agree, it looks ugly. Potentially helpful for those with limited space, but still ugly. I'm also not liking how it looks like the hard drive is hard-wired as opposed to swappable like the 'Phat,' but at least both models will be the same price, and cheaper than before.

So they drop the price when I'm about to buy 7 games in 6 months and thus cannot afford one...

Having said that, if you have a 360 I don't really see the need to buy one...vice versa if you have a PS3.

Hmmm. Nope, still not going to buy it... Only one game on there that I really want to get and I can play it at a friends house.

The 60, 20(not in production, but still easy to find), 80 uses emulation which seemed iffy at first but is pretty good now that they have had a few patches.
The 40 gig has no compatibility. Those are what I know of

The old 80G ps3s had BC.

Well this is good to know. Now, if my 3rd ps3 breaks I can get a new one!

Isn't it tradition to have a slim edition of a PS console? They did it for the PSOne and PS2 as well.

Hopefully the performance isn't affected.

None of the models being sold at the moment have PS2 BC, just PS BC.

EDIT: Whoops, news source fucked up.

The only way to get a model with PS2 BC is Ebay, and then you've got exorbitant prices to deal with (at least, the last time I checked.)

I think its too little too late, though the price drop is very welcome, its far too late. Its only coming down to the 360s price range now, and im sure MS will lower the 360s price now too. They might shift a few more units for xmas, but most parents will not be spending a huge amount this xmas due to the R word. I dont know how effective this is going to be, most people who wanted a ps3 have one already, the slim model is the same as the ps2 slim, just for the people buying it now.
