Sony Still Unsure About Credit Card Leak on PSN

How does a profitless group of internet users completely decimate a multi-million dollar company's online services for up to a week and potentially steal credit card information? I wouldn't be so irritated if they had WARNED their users and not lied to them about it being 'compulsory maintenance', but informed PS3 owners that they were organised attacks by a group of hackers and maybe, btw, you should protect your details in any way you can. It's not Sony's fault, I agree, but they're handling this situation in a terrible manner. It wasn't exactly an unprecedented attack either.

Oh sweet irony, I had to remove my credit card because I registered my PSN ID on another system and didn't want to bother finding my wallet to reconfirm it. This was only a few days before PSN went down, and I never bothered to put it back on.

Of course whether or not their was a leak depends on who actually did the attack and what their motives are. Is this a serious fuck up on Sony's part? Hell yes. But even still, I think people should reserve their judgement until PSN is back up and Sony explains what the fuck happened. If Sony doesn't offer an explanation, feel free to bash them to your heart's content.

I can't speak for anyone else but the network outage hasn't really affected me. I could still play Portal 2 single player and co-op split-screen. I also have plenty other games on Steam to play.

Wow. Now I'm glad my old PS3 got fried. I didn't have time to re-enter the card details on my new one, so I deleted the card from the network, just a few days before this started. Lucky me, I guess.

Hahahahah. Oh my fucking god. Thats terrible. I dont know why im laughing. But thats just such an amazing fuck up. Seriously Sony. Just... WOW.
I'm laughing with you buddy.

Something is telling me Sony might very well be done in the video game era. That's not fanboyism talking, that's if-I-had-a-PS3-I-would-be-screaming-at-my-computer-ism

This here is proof that no matter how powerful you are...you're not invincible
That's an unfathomably large leap you just made, your shins alright?...

wow the 360 fanboys are having a field day with this, its a good job 360 doesn't have any hardware failures... oh wait
I'm not a fanboy I love games not consoles and it doesn't matter what I play them on, but I can't let this slide.

Nothing has been confirmed, but lets assume worse case scenario.

Xbox warranty is 1 year (3 years for the 3 red rings)
The most you have to sacrifice is 1 month till you get it back or $100 and one month if you're out of warranty
Xbox comes out approx 4 months (I believe...) before the Wii and PS3
Xbox releases the elite edition as a base for every Xbox past November 2008 releases
If you're Xbox broke and didn't want wait a month (Again don't know why you can't play on something else or someone else's)
You pay $300 for an elite console and I believe a 100 or 250 gig harddrive
It doesn't break again I have never had it broken and I don't personally know anyone else who has I do know a fair amount of people who play.

All in all it was a mess but the month of waiting is countered by the fact it comes out 3-4 months before the rest of them

PS3 costed $600 out of the gate for the good stuff (2 xboxs with the good stuff)
I keep somewhere between $2000-$4000 in my bank at any one moment for emergancies
If I had a PS3 that money could very well be gone

Get over yourself this is the biggest fuck-up since...gee I guess it is the biggest fuck-up period.

Now is not the time to be a fan-boy. This is the time gamers must unite. A hacker (presumably a gamer too most hackers are gamers) just turned our favorite past-time into an attack onto ourselves. We need to lynch this asshat!

Well, I suppose this is conclusive evidence that the PS3 does, in fact, suck. So, in addition to the Xbox sucking due to it's hardware issues, the Wii sucking due to it's lack of hardcore games and gimmicky waggle-interface, The PC gaming scene sucking because of constant ex$pensive hardware updating to keep up with game specs, I guess it's time to go buy a...

Wow wow wow wow, lots of hate towards Sony and nobody is taking it upon themselves to actually do anything to protect themselves. Seriously guys, this can happen to anybody. Not just PSN, ANYBODY! I'm not worried about myself, I use a my check card and I very little in my account. And the bank can track this as well as myself. Here's the thing though guys, this is just a proof of concept. PSN isn't the only cash cow out there, Paypal, Xbox Live, Steam, any billing agency or service has the numbers stored away in records. Even after PSN users possibly had their information taken, it isn't the end. Any place is a target. Who cares how sophisticated the defenses are, if bacteria and viruses can evolve so can hackers.

But the thing is that despite all the records, I don't consider it a breach of my identity, my SSN isn't used on there. So why all the hate? Just be on guard to deal with it.

Also stop with the 360 superiority shit, I don't give a damn about how fucking safe your system is. No network is safe. Food for thought.

Not even the courtesy to send an e-mail to PSN users? I mean really wtf as far as I'm concerned that is strike 3 as far as I'm concerned I'm done with sony they can suck it for crimes of general and absurd douchebaggery. Its a real shame too bc I don't like microsoft either but they didn't claim their system unhackable...they just made it very difficult to do anything you like with it by requiring msoft memory and making crappy software and OS's.

You mean: You get what you don't pay for.

Also, I'd be willing to bet Anon wouldn't dare take credit for this even if it was responsible. I mean, gamers can be quite vindictive.

Thing I don't get about Anonymous, rather the concept of it: If someone talks about "going after members of Anonymous" roughly 80% of the responses are "Anon is not a group" or "everyone is Anonymous," yet when stuff like this happens people will quickly point out that the perp is not part of Anonymous.

...Which is it?
Simple said, Anon = People.

But because Anon 'only' exist on the internet its People + Internet = Anon.

The Anonymous is a meme/fictional "internet consciousness" that acts as facade for people to act as unity. The Anonymous is nothing more than an idea or goal that people agree to pursue forward for and reach once they unite. The Internet's ability to unite people and break few social barriers helps in this process greatly.

Anonymous can also have a two or more goals that clashes with eachother. Such case can be seen in the Boxxy meme, where the "internet" was split up between haters and supporters.

People can act as Anonymous on their own or as a small group, BUT if the majority of internet doesnt agree with this small groups views, a counter goal will be created. Anon stops being Anon once it can be named. Therefore, a small group of people cant act against Anonymous's will as Anonymous, as without support they would be easily named/tagged and separated from the mass.

If 'Anonymous' says they didnt do it, then that simply means they didnt do it, as that is the idea and will of Anonymous, that this group of people is following.
Anymore questions?

Good thing I never put any credit card information on my gaming machines.

This is all very unfortunate, but I can proudly say that my Playstation fanboyism is fully intact.
Ugh... Could you imagine if someone hacked XBox Live? Microsoft would destroy them with unparalleled violence. It would be a bloodbath...

I still think there's a good possibility someone accidentally formatted their only hard drive and they didn't have any backups and they're too embarrassed to admit it.

"That was 'rm -rf / tmp', right?"
