The answer is, of course, to get a PC. Seriously, I hate the direction console gaming is going these days with all the anti-consumer practices going into play. Not to mention all the ridiculous requirements made of developers.
PCs will probably be no better, I imagine Windows 9 coming out with a DNA + fingerprint authorisation lock or some other evil restrictive bullshit.

Honestly, if we're gonna do DRM, some fingerprint/eye scan/non-painful form of DNA recognition might be far better than what we're currently dealing with. I mean think about it, one scan, and you're away.
Yeah and woe be on you if you have the audacity to let your kid/spouse/sibling/friend play your copy of a game, you CRRRRIMINAL!

Seriously, okay, patenting this, fine, fair game but if they actually use it to restrict our rights even more, they can go fuck themselves and drown in lawsuits. Because there are some countries in the world who will not let such a thing stand if it's attempted.
What you have there is programming implementation that you have absolutely no evidence for will happen. What they patented has the potential uses of being used the way you just said, but so has the internet in general.
Hence "if". What's your point?

No.

Seriously, no. Tough shit. I don't care how much I like games and have bought from Sony. No amount of entertainment, no KIND of entertainment, needs to be DNA-locked. That kind of technology is for CLASSIFIED GOVERNMENT FILES. Not games.

I wonder if they realize that if they make this, pirates will make a way to counter it in a week or less then spread it to every other pirate. It won't do any good at all.

Meh. I give it a few years past the hypothetical release of a DNA-scanning plugin or addon for the pirate scene to just tweak the thing's firmware so *any* blood sample gets "recognized" as the valid one.

Deep down, it always comes down to electronics and software. These two things can be messed with, even if you're trying to monitor something as unique and unchanging as someone's DNA.

Or, you know, another Geohot clone's going to crop out of the woodwork and fix that for us.

Sony's just not getting the message. They could tie games to our DNA, our iris patterns, thumbprints or even our freaking semen - it wouldn't stop anyone from bypassing that and gifting the masses with free shit.

Piracy can't be fought with hardware. It can be fought using better habits as a company. Things like less price-gouging, less severe authorial control on its associated studios, etc. Give people an incentive to purchase your stuff, don't *punish* them for buying your product legally. That's just plain freaking retarded.

OK patents are made all the time. In some ways patents are a rip off but that is a different topic. It means they have the right to do it and it means if anyone elce wants to do it they got to work out a different way to do it.

I doubt they will use it hell a load of people are probably going to avoid using sony products simply cause of the patent. But as long as they do not use it on something then I think we are safe.

Then again since when has it been policy that anything is only to be used by one person with the exception of tickets.

Could this lead to you having to buy 3 additional licences before you can play split screen and the end of the days of going I am doing this do you want to go on the play station until I am ready and will this spell the end for the family consol?

I already hate it when I have to create an account to play and even worse when I have to make up 3 dummy accounts for when I decide to play with mates...what happened to the days of just pressing multi player and then selecting the characters.

But ye that is not going to happen.

nope, this isn't a bad idea at all, not even a little ..... this won't come back to bite them in the ass at all if they actually try implementing this ...

Sony also patented the Matrix a while ago as well.

They still haven't made it yet.

why do they want to do this? I swear Sony loves to give us good stuff yet do stupid things at the same time...

What if I don't have the aforementioned recognizable biometrics?

Better call Sony customer support.

But seriously: what if someone had iris surgery, or accidentally scarred their fingertips or something like that? Does that mean they're locked out of their own gaming library?

And on the flip-side, how much would it cost to implement the hardware and software into all their systems? And how much of it would be a wasted investment when someone inevitably finds a crafty workaround or just finds a way to break the system open? You'd have to be as thick as a brick to think this a worthwhile idea.

It's likely they're just patent-hogging: covering bases in the event that this system does become feasible on a large scale without being obligated to put down a hefty investment just yet.

This wont happen. Fingerprints and iris scans are technically possible, but the cost of making them useful for anything is too high for it to work with a console. I have seen laptops with a fingerprint scanner and my friend got his prints accepted when he pressed his elbow against it. I don't know much about iris scans, but it seems unlikely to be implemented.

DNA sampling on the other hand (not a joke about the fingerprints). It takes time (right now I think it takes a few hours) and it requires a variety splicing enzymes, markers and a reader. It's cheaper than it used to be, but too expensive for it to be a requirement for games for a long time.

I don't see how they could possibly implement this, but if they managed to find a way that is not inconvenient, expensive, degrading, painful, or unsanitary I wouldn't really mind.

As long as it doesn't require a constant internet connection.
