I like how you guys act as if this is the 1st time there's been corporate mudslinging.

Remember "Genesis does what Nintendon't"?

Jeez don't get so emotional over your games.
Difference. I never had my intelligence directly insulted by Nintendo fans for picking the Genesis in the 16-bit era. Once Sony came along things took a turn.
So it's Sony's fault there's fanboys around?

I thought it was the internet myself. The ability to anonymously say whatever you want to strangers with no repurcussions. Oh I loathe the internet sometimes...

Well, someone is taking the devs too seriously.

They're just doing their jobs. No need to be mad at them. They all do it, or are you trying to defend them? :/

Part of me wonders whether this is just a chicken and egg scenario. What came first; shovelware that wouldn't satisfy the hardcore gamers, or an audience that is totally devoid of a hardcore contingent? As many people have said, the Wii has sold millions of units since its release, are we really to believe that there wasn't a single hardcore gamer who bought one of these consoles?

When the Wii first came out, the majority of the third party games where either just crappy PS2 ports or original (yet uninspired) titles with motion controls tacked on (and barely functioning in some cases). It feels to me that the third parties were basically pushing the kiddy shovelware on the Wii when there was an audience for hardcore/mature titles, choosing to focus on the graphical dick-swinging contest between the Xbox and PS3 instead, eventually leading to that audience abandoned Nintendo's console in the face of all this craptitude.

Whilst all this was happening, Nintendo (being the company that actually developed the console, of course) were the only lot who were making games that fully utilized the Wii's capabilities. Customers quickly picked up on the message; Nintendo games, good, recommended purchase. Third party games, broken, stay the hell away.

Now, the third parties have finally started putting out some decent games (in some very niche genres, I hasten to add... on-rail shooters? Really*?), and now they are complaining that there is not an audience to buy their game? Sorry, but from where I'm sitting, they really only have themselves to blame.

You can't starve a person and then complain when his corpse doesn't eat the five course meal you've spent all day cooking.

(*Actually, I really did enjoy Dead Space Extraction and those two Resident Evil games... But the point still stands!!! Oh, and that House of the Dead Overkill was also pretty awesome... dammit)

Yeah, they don't want to compete with Nintendo. After all, Sony is far easier to beat.

Anyway, yadda yadda advertising, blah blah quality games, cha cha established franchises sell.

I thought I emphasized this enough: Considering how many Wiis there are out there, those games did not sell very well, regardless of what the developers' goals were.

Those games also are not as niche as you make them look, but lets take a look at extreme mainstream titles like Modern Warfare - it does not sell VERY well on the Wii, especially considering there are a million more Wiis out there than PS3s and 360s (and possibly gaming PCs) together.

It's probably just me but I have to say I don't remember the other two talking this much shit about each other, it always seems to come mainly from Sony.

I own all three consoles (Saving works kids!) but it seems that there is an inverse correlation between which consoles I pay most attention to, to how much noise the creators make.

Is it just me or does this all make Sony look like they're trying to big themselves up like the maladjusted nerd trying to look cool? (That's usually my job)

Dead Space: Extraction was a very ambitious rail shooter. I liked it a lot, and don't regret leaving my copy of the original game alone while I waited for the prequel.

But it's still a rail shooter. It is, as you say, a niche genre mostly for those who fondly remember playing the arcade originals, and not a game that would sell all too well on any platform... unless they promoted it heavily while hiding what genre the game actually belonged to.

Modern Warfare isn't really a good example. COD4 was released on the Wii two years after the original game, and on the exact same day as Modern Warfare 2. It had no advertising, and very little shelf space, as it was eclipsed in both those departments by its newer, younger brother on the PS3 and Xbox.

At the end of the day, the vast majority of people who wanted to own COD4 already had a copy by the time the Wii port arrived.

I wonder about that though. A large chunk of the gaming world online (the demographic that was going to buy this game considering it got no ad campaign) was split on madWorld due to it's art direction (I've had housemates telling me they can't see what the hell is going on).

NMH is a low budget "punk" title with no advertising, and Muramasa is a 2D game a good chunk of the world said should be downloadable. And MW: Reflex? That sold close to a million, while World At War sold a million and a half.

They sell well from a financial standpoint. They don't have to be sold to every man, woman, child and their pet to be successful in the sales department. If that was the case, then Ninja Gaiden II tanked on the 360 because it didn't break a million, and NG: Sigma II tanked because it sold less than No More Heroes.

Very few games sell to the majority of it's platform's owners. If that's how we gauged whether or not games succeeded, then most games this generation failed. Bethesda has stated they want to sell to at least two percent of the Wii market and they'll be happy, because that's over a million sales.

Install base has little to do with how well games can sell. Take Resident Evil 4 on the PS2 for example; no one can deny the game's quality, but it sold about 3 million units on a system that has sold over 100 million units. Does that mean it sold like crap? And what about Ninja Gaiden II on 360 and PS3? It sold over 1.5 million units, but that's on a combined system base of nearly 70 million. Is that a failure?

And the guy a couple posts beneath you already explained why Modern Warfare is a poor example.

EDIT: Gah, Chrome, you ninja. Well-put, though.

Sony meet me at camera 3.

Ok what are you doing? You have a brilliant marketing campaign going with a charasmatic character. Why are you letting these CEO jerkwads get in front of anything remotely resembling a form of media spout off? You aren't going to get fans by putting the others down. You will by building yours up.

Yes, because lack of advertising has no effect of sales of third party titles on the Wii. It all has to do with the success of first party titles...

Maybe if the architecture of the PS3 was easier to work with, then I might see the validity of this statement. Or not; it'd still be pretty ridiculous either way.

Methinks Sony has a case of sour grapes; why else are they producing so much whine? *ba-dum tish* [http://instantrimshot.com/]
OMFG..that link "*ba-dum tish*" to the instant rimshot is the funniest, kewlest thing ever. love it.
