Sony's gun is aimed squarely at their foot, will they fire?

Granted this is still in the rumor phase, but if its true then Sony is full of greedy (insert creative yahtzee metaphor for idiots). Locking out used games, no backwards compatability, and an internet connection needed to even turn the thing on? Such a console would surely tank. I know I sure as hell wouldn't buy it, and I doubt the gaming populace at large would even consider such a restrictive machine.

+1 reason to think about converting to a PC gamer

If this is true I really hope it blows up in Sony's face.

The whole locking out used games thing was supposed to be on the PS3 apparently. If it was even seriously considered then the massive backlash against that rumour caused them to remove it.

I think Sony are generally clever enough to not seriously piss off their customers that much, especially not since the PS3 took so long to make a profit. They'll be wanting the PS4 to have as smooth a launch as possible and such features would likely prevent that.

If Microsoft forces online activation for Windows XP, we'll all stay on Windows 2000 forever!

M$ will do the same thing, so it's not like you can go elsewhere if you don't like it.

Not entirely serious, maybe.

What would that reason be?

-Locking out used games
-an internet connection needed to even turn the thing on

"I deal with this shit already."?

I'm curious about the seriousness of these claims. Used games must be a serious problem to the games industry if the next line of consoles will restrict them.

I'd like to see some official confirmation of all these claims, as well as what games I can expect to see from this next gen console.

When did it become acceptable to take the word of an anonymous source as fact? If Sony themselves says something, or the source reveals their identity to be someone involved in the development of the next console, then you can take their word and feel angry. But until then anyone could make up what ever they want. It is stupid to complain about rumours.

I doubt the used games thing is actually true cause I don't think Sony are that stupid. Also, those specs sound pretty darn good so I hope that is true, and the latin name makes sense considering the Vita.

I have it on good authority that in order to curb piracy, the next xbox will require an anal probe for authentication, each and every time you wish to turn it on.

*sits back and awaits this rumor to appear on IGN*

The difference is that Steam actually works more than 10% of the time. Meeting that standard seems to be too tall an order for other companies.
true, very true.

Very true.

While most games companies are looking to take things away from consumers, Steam is trying to add them.

Except you don't buy Steam itself separately for five hundred and ninety nine us dollars. :p

OT: I kinda hope Sony doesn't go through with this. I grew up with all three Playstation systems. And I'd hate for the Playstation brand to kill itself like this.

Really? How's that going to work?

This whole rumor from a "reliable source" business sounds incredibly dodgy to me. In any case, I'm pretty sure that it was officially stated that no new Playstation is in the works.

If this rumor turns out to be true (pretty big if), we really may be talking about the videogame crash of 2013 in a few years.Considering how anti-consumer the industry has become, I won't exactly be crying if I have nothing but indie PC and mobile games to play for a years, at least as new releases. The indie devs tend to treat their customers like customers, instead of wallets with legs.

It's not. They aren't going to do it. They just pay a little lip service to the rumor once a year to remind people that they aren't ignoring them.
