I'm a firm believer that the only way to 'get' Watchmen is to have grown up during the cold war. If you were born after say...1980...there's little chance you'll be able to appreciate the undertones.

Wait!!!!!! Don't flame just yet! Let me say my opinion first.
I don't hate the medium of comic books. I like the format of comic books just not the content. I like plenty of comic books. Scott pilgrim, Watchmen and that halo graphic novel was cool (elites are awesome). But the majority of comics are about super heroes which in and of it self isn't a bad thing. But the story's they get up to and the things they do is just this jumbled mess of barely related events that they just string together with barely relevant time travel and inter dimensional sub plots. Dc is particularly guilty of this.
I don't hate comic but I rarely find any that I like. Does anyone share a similar opinion? Could someone recommend me a series?
Yeah, I hate those 50+ year continuities. This is actually why I prefer manga - not because the art is better (it used to be, but American comics actually look pretty damn good these days) but because even long-ass series like Inu Yasha are shorter and have less of that stuff that Superman or Batman. And I don't typically like long-ass series in manga. Generally, 4-8 graphic novels is ideal. It's hard to go on much longer and keep a coherient story line.

Scott Pilgrim is an excellent example of American comics at their best. Short, self-contained, strong plot, well arc-ed. Sandman was good too, but it did tend to wander about a bit - still damn good though.

Edit: Oh, nearly forgot Sin City. Not such a strong focus on plot, but the short windows into different characters worked really well.

No, not really. While Marvel and DC may be guilty of super-convoluted plots, there are plenty of other amazing comics that do not focus on super-heroes or impenetrable continuity dependent plots. Here are some easy to get into but still excellent series that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone:

Fables (and spin-off)
Hellboy (and spin-off)
Transmetropolitan
Y: The last man
The Umbrella Academy
While I haven't read Fables or Transmetropolitan (I have heard some great things about Fables), those other three are without a doubt comic book classics. Definitly check them out.

Also Preacher is an incredible series, but its incredibly dark and should not be read around parents or any other guardian that punishes you for reading very mature content.

Oh, both Fables and Transmetropolitan are amazing. I highly recommend that you read both, though they are also very mature ("Sex Puppets" anyone?). I really should check out Preacher one of these days...

I do not like comics as a general rule. The exact reason is hard to pin down. Part of it is that I do not like serialized stories. I want to sit and read a story from start to finish without having to wait for an arbitrary period before the next installment is released. The fact that I'd need to read a substantial amount of any particular work's back catalog before I could really understand the world is another part (and this too is a problem with the serialized nature of the thing). The major reason however is that I simply cannot stand the idiocy inherent in many of the story arcs. Individual stories can be good, but when a series runs for decades and is handed off to new writers and artists silly things tend to transpire. The multiverse, for example, is the single worst excuse I've ever seen in any work for resolving plot dilemmas.
