I just want twitter to go down so celebrities can find out about the bill and make PSAs about fighting it, then people will fight it.
Personally, I don't know how America will get through a single day not knowing what Snookie thinks.

Are you trying to bring down the system?
Shhhhhhh... Thats part 2 of my plan to take over Charon, Pluto's moon.

It's a secret.

It's sad how many people don't even know SOPA exists. The word needs to get out and what this bill truly means to the future of the internet and the people who use it.

I'm hoping the Escapist, Wikipedia, TV Tropes and the like are going to join the blackout in protest. It's truly frightening that there's been little-to-no media coverage at all (but, sadly, I rather expected that). But wow, that's a large list. It's looking at least a little hopeful.

If Wikipedia joins in, I hope that instead of taking the site down entirely, they make the SOPA page the only viewable one.

Okay... I'm gonna be my usual pessimistic self when it comes to things like this...

This whole SOPA strike is a nice gesture, it's really heartwarming, but all the sites listed as 'striking' so far, no one is going to bat so much as an eyelash, nobody but internet junkies are going to notice those go down. I'm also going to predict that many, if not ALL of the major players such as Facebook, Google/Youtube and Twitter won't join in a 'web-strike'.

We'll see of course, time will tell.
Arguably, nobody but Internet junkies even cares about SOPA anyway, so at least they're going after the right people. Then again, pretty much every Internet junkie already knows about SOPA, so this strike won't help build awareness in the slightest.

...are we fucked yet? Is it official?

Escapist join in as well.

Every site should be doing this as a unit.

Wikipedia, Youtube, Google, Twitter, Deviant Art, Facebook. Etc.

Looking at the list of sites, the majority are sites only really used by people already aware of SOPA.

This strike, as with just about every other form of online protest, will achieve nothing. IMHO. Unless, as has already been stated, you can get at least on of the big social networking sites on board - but that ain't gonnae happen.

Yea screw striking. I'm just going to sell all my shares of companies that endorse the bill. I foresee stock prices to dive after SOPA passes.

Even just Wikipedia.

Then every single university, collage and high school student in the world will know.
And so will the people they like to whine to.

For a moment there, I thought we were holding a strike against SOPA, torches and pitchforks style. Damn...
If you really want, I'm sure you can protest it with torches and pitchforks somewhere.

Not sure how Riot Control or such forces will feel about it, but you still can.

Yeah, with nothing to copy verbatim, higher education will be in serious trouble.

Oi! I said style. Doesn't have to be literal.

Anyway, say the millions irked by this thing just start making a beeline for DC? What if EVERYONE who doesn't agree with SOPA appeared on the presidential doorstep? Could they REALLY do anything about it? Far too many people to deal with per square mile? Happened before. Could happen again. And you know it's gonna be a long day when someone breaks out their "I have a Meme" speech.

Wait, if we all strike by leaving the internet, how will we know how effective it is? Wouldn't coming online to check how it's going contradict our efforts?

Apparently Google, Youtube, Facebook and Wiki are already on the list (mulitple times).

I think it'd be hypocritical if the Escapist doesn't go offline, seeing how 99% of us are strongly against it. Then again, I suppose it's up to the owner and how much money he'll lose going offline for a day. I don't think it'd be pointless, there would be plenty of lurkers who don't know about this.

I agree that The Escapist wouldn't benefit from participating in such a strike. This is a site whose contributors and users are steeped in and knowledgeable about (and funded by, besides) the things opposing acts like this represents; this strike's purpose is to present the issue to people who don't understand the negative consequences, because of their lack of connection. Thus, the idea is to hit them in a place they will understand: their wallets, the place they're so desperate to protect at the cost of all else, even the people who contribute to their girth. The concept is to show them what would happen if those contributions suddenly ceased.

Then again, it couldn't hurt for The Escapist to go down, either.

Afterthought: Cracked and Dailymotion aren't on there, off the top of my head. They should be.
