I find myself quite pessimistic about this generation. There hasn't been a single game that has made me feel like "wow! I'm glad I got a new console/upgraded my PC for this"

That said, some of the games mentioned already were pretty innovative and/or made me feel really good playing them.

Bioshock wins my best-FPS-since-Halflife-1 award
Left 4 Dead wins my this-hasn't-been-done-before award
Team Fortress 2 wins my Done-to-death-but-finally-perfected award.

FPS's have been done to death, and they are being even more over done this generation, so I guess it's kinda cool that some one was creative enough to impress me with the genre a few more times.

Thinking on it some more, I think some DS titles might actually have my real votes. Kirby's Canvas Curse, Phoenix Wright, Castlevania games, and though not completly innovative, the recent Advanced Wars was damn near perfect. I guess when I think of "next-gen" games, I don't know if I count portable games in there.

EDIT: Sacred 2. That's one game I'm glad I played. No one else has played it, but the level of detail on the world is great, the humor is great, and the combination of hack-and-slash RPG with free-roaming RPG is great.

Mount and Blade, with all it's faults and blemishes is the best, most innovative game of this generation. That and Empire Total War (please be, oh please).

L4D WOULD get my vote, but I got bored after the third week. There just isn't enough content for me to keep playing I find. It almost feels incomplete in that aspect. Also, with each FPS that Valve that releases (with the exception of TF2) I cannot help but feel its nothing but another mod of Half Life 2.

Current vote goes to MGS4. played through it eight times now, and I plan on going through a couple of more times until I get all the badges!

by best most people have put thier favourite, now if i unwittingly followed this trend i'd be a bit silly (WoW does'nt cut it as best generation game). The reason why is becuase if we are honest can we base that a game is best by its popularity and if so i argue that its not WoW or left4dead that you've gone and told your mates so awe struck by but the first halo and here's why- Halo was incredibly innovative on so many scales from inventory structure to vehicles. It was easily accessable and although did not have online, there was already this option. The original halo has been forgotten in acknowledgment i feel but for me no game may have thought outside the box on so many various levels. The list of reasons go on, sadly halo has been cookie cut to the point all we have nowadays are brownies (interpret that as you will), newer versions of such innovation include Mirrors Edge. Great stuff, if a little wobbly in places but at least its original and you wont be babbling about Oblivion in 4 months time, but you would still be entirely impress by the innovation of something like the targeting system in legend of zelda.
Therefore, i wish to put forward that it is which game that has best advanced the industry on a whole variety of different aspects, should be choosen as your best choice. For me Halo, although i throughly acknowledge that it isn't as original as it was doesn't that just demonstrate my point?
Oh and Guitar Hero was a great concept too, my 1 legged grandad at 75 cant get enough of heartbreaker on the drums.
(I'd also recognise that some people may not consider halo this genration but the consoles for me seem blurred together somewhat as the last generation just felt like it flew by too quickly)

Gears of War 1 + 2.

Its the first game to make a cover system work extremely well, without it feeling overly clucky or time consuming, its even faster paced than most fps, can't get enough multi.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. the game just rules, great story, deep characters, cool levels, fun times, OK maybe it was a tad on the easy side but it i'd rather it was a tad too easy than getting stuck all the time, get really frustrated then hurl it out the nearest window without checking if it's open or not. anyway, i love the game and it's going to take a lot for a game to beat it.
