Apparently he had a skin condition.

EDIT: I'd like to add a bit onto this thread, does anyone think this wasn't the real reason for it & why? Some people do think that skin condition was a lie.

He had a skin disease. I forgot what it called but it turns your skin a different color.

Edit: Go ninja, go ninja, go!

Yeah-apparently because of the aforementioned skin condition, it meant that he'd look a hell of a lot better if he completely changed his skin colour rather than having unsightly patches on his skin.

Yeah, vitiligo apparently, it's a pretty common skin disease with black people, though it's never that severe.

Don't know if he was officially diagnosed with it though.

Yeah, what the other 4-5ish people above me have said, its reported he had some sort of skin disease...
Although, part of me remains skeptical of it, if only it being due to the fact its reported by news media...

I think he had some rare skin disorder that made his skin peel. Eventually it got to the point were his skin keep peeling and then it got to the under layer of his skin thus making him appear whiter and whiter.

Edit - basically what everyone else is saying.

I'd just like to say, completely seriously, when I was a little kid (around 4 or 5) I thought Michael Jackson turned white because I took the term "plastic surgery" literally and thought they just didn't make plastic for black people, so he had to have white plastic instead.

I told this to my wife, who naturally laughed... but when she was a kid she thought there were two separate Michael Jacksons, so we're even.

He had skin cancer and had white blotches all around his body so he decided to bleach his skin so it would match

Ive seen many people with vitiligo, and it spreads slowly in blotchy patterns. if you look at MJ, he went very quickly from black to asian looking to goth white. I doubt severely he had vitiligo.

He might have bleached his skin after finding out he has vitiligo. That's what I'd do.
