Just got back from seeing Inglorious Basterds, and whilst it was an amazing film in it's own right, the soundtrack really sealed the deal for me.
Ennio Morricone's stuff always makes me happy, and his work on this film was no exception. Also loved the Bowie track, and pretty much everything else.

So what are your favorite soundtracks to a film or TV series, and why to you like them? What do they add to the film?

ugh, Inglorious Basterds was terrible IMO, and I can't remember the soundtrack =\

I really love the work of Joe Hisaishi, who does all the soundtracks for the Ghibli films.

Anything from Hans Zimmer is guaranteed awesome.
I loved his score in the Dark Knight, it added the audio greatness while Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, and Christian Bale took up the screen.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. Ennio Morricone is a god.

Incidentally, it's also the best film ever made.

YES! I loves me some Zimmer. Although my fave stuff of his (out of what I have heard) is from Black Hawk Down.

Ahhh, another fan of Ennio Morricone. I can see from your avatar that you are a man of taste.
However I gotta say that my preferred piece of his from those spaghetti westerns is the theme for A Few Dollars More. The opening credits... Just sheer awesome...

Hmmmmmmmm....Joe Hisaishi. Spirited Away is probably his best score.

Howard Shore, Jon Brion, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri and Mark Mothersbaugh are among my favourites.

Touche. (Dont know how to do the accent thingy)

Ecstasy of Gold is fantastic, but it really is hard to choose a favorite piece of his. I gotta say, it's even better played as an opening theme for a live Metallica show. It pumps you (well me :p) up so much :D

To each their own I guess.

I'd never heard of Joe Hisaishi before now, but I just checked a bit of his stuff, and I must say, it was very nice :)

Soundtracks are often my favourite parts of movies. 8D Uhm... most recently I've been listening to the Star Trek (2009) movie soundtrack, scored by Michael Giacchino who also did the soundtrack to LOST, which is wonderfully atmospheric. As for games, the Kingdom Hearts soundtrack (because I'm such a huge fangirl of scores from Final Fantasy games and Disney movies). xD I'll also put it another vote for the works of Hans Zimmer, particularly that of The Dark Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

My actual movie favourite is probably At World's End, since I can listen to particular songs from that soundtrack over and over again and just not get sick of them ('One Day' is very yes). Or the score from The Lion King. D= Never fails to make me sad.

Anything and everything John Murphy has already done, period.

Hans Zimmer's already been mentioned a few times so that's good. Vangelis is up there, too.

In the House in a Heartbeat was the tune that practically made 28 Days Later for me.
Seconded by the believable cast and the fresh take on the Zombie movie genre.

deathnote [bYhLlz5bK6c] had a brilliant [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrH_dzdyWaw&feature=related] soundtrack [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uUVX376U4M&feature=related], so i'll probably go with that.

then again [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daOj1g0v78c], higurashi [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvE8XO6YH6o] is tempting [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuofG8a7EEk] for this as well...

and i forgot about elven lied [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaV6eDvgiG4] in the first post. how could i do that? i use it all the time on here.

if it was for a game, then final fantasy 4. it was the first game to truly immerse me, and the soundtrack does it so well you barely even notice.

I agree with your Deathnote and higurashi assessment. Eureka 7 and Macross Frontier also had a nice soundtrack. Especially Macross Frontier. After all, music is a weapon in that series.
