Good. I'd rather this than adult gamers being denied games because of a lack of R18+.

As a kiwi I would like to mention how damned easy it is to obtain games movies etc rated higher than your age. Half the guys I know at school (yr 9) own or have played at least 1 part of the GTA series.

Actually, if handled properly, this is the right step.

Let's be honest, the MA15+ rating is a sham and a failure, even for movies. If the limit isn't set to 18, it is not taken seriously.

So ideally, the existing plethora of MA15+ games would be either downgraded to a "recommended M15+" which they practically are now anyway, or in one or two specific cases, upgraded to R18+. This is good. Then the R18+ rating can be applied to all Refused Classification games (except those deemed to contain pedophilia basically).

So no. This is a step in precisely the correct direction on paper. What remains to be seen is whether they bugger it up completely in practice (all signs point to "too right they will").

That's not that bad, the MA rating isn't very necessary with both an M and R rating existing.

This isn't exactly news either, they have been planning this for months.

God forbid youth have access to content appropriate for their age.

After all, they can't vote. So who gives a shit about them?
Pretty much, yeah. They have tons to do; making a few video games unavailable to them over the counter unless their parents approve isn't the end of the world.

Oh wait, I'm talking about first world kids here. Of course it's the end of the world.

People should spare a thought for the Germans. They have enough censorship red-tape to sink another Bismarck

The last Rammstein album is a good example.

To be honest, I feel that this is kind of fair. Also, this is old news.

Anyway, there aren't a lot of MA15+ games that don't warrant R18+. The only exceptions I can think of are 'Half-Life', 'Team Fortress 2', 'Second Sight', 'Call of Duty 4', 'Painkiller', 'Serious Sam', 'Silent Hill 2', yada yada. This might sound like a lot of games, but take a look around and you'll find a lot more than just that.

To be honest, that's a heavy sacrifice, but I think it might be worth it. Game developers may actually calm down for once and focus their games on things that aren't swearing, blood and breasts. Hell, 'inFAMOUS' was rated M. The 'Portal' series is PG (at least, it is here in Australia). 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time' was also rated M. What do all of these games have in common? They are the top dogs of their time and still remain standing to this day. In contrast, I barely remember most MA15+ games that I play. Hell, 'Halo''s only an M-rated game and it's one of the most popular things ever.

There's nothing stopping 'Vanquish' from being an M-rated game except for all the swearing. This can apply to a lot of games, but maybe this will encourage developers to be more sensible for once.

I was going to say! Germany are even worse than Australia censorship wise...

And for any Americans here: This is equivalent to removing R and jumping from PG-13 to NC-17! (Removing M, and jumping from T to AO)
Not exactly. Our government plays no part in our films/games rating system. There is no law to enforce any of it.

Edit: And indeed, our Supreme Court considers it unconstitutional to do so, at least as far as violence goes. Sex is another story. We are bloodthirsty prudes.

You just reminded me of the mockumentary-documentary "This film is not yet Rated".

Thank you. XD

It's an absolutely terrible implementation of the rating, no doubt about it. Seriously, how hard can it be? Hopefully the imbeciles in charge here will come to their senses on this one, but they don't often do.

Glad I'm over 18, feel for the slightly younger South Aussies though.
