Where Lim Yo Hwan goes, the Koreans will follow! you watch. Give it a bit more time. SC didnt get to where it is until the last Balance patch came out. SC2 is still patching.

p.s. $30million is something Blizzard makes in a week... yall really think that poultry sum is enough to move the ppl of SK? XD Well anyways big law suit currently going on between GOM/Blizzard vs. KeSPA

It's actually slowly moving in Blizzard's favor; the major networks - and some of the superstars - are starting to switch over.

It's probably not nearly as quickly as big blue would have liked.
Isn't Big Blue IBM?

StarCraft II's AI is far better.

And of course StarCraft 1's AI knew where your base was.
I just witnessed SC2 AI's all-knowingness yesterday. I had an observer off in the middle of no where, had been parked there for a long time, the CPU flies a fleet to the observers location, then scans it with orbital scanner as soon as they are in range and blows it up....

This is because the game is a piece of crap. You just CAN`T release the same product with 3 more pixels per unit and call it new and worthy for our century.

Guitar Hero, Tony Hawks, Madden, Fifa, Final Fantasy, <insert 90% of all other long running series here>.

I don't see everyones hang up with B.Net 2.0. Ok, there's no Lans. But you can still make a game and invite those you want to play with.

As for S.Korea, as the pros move over to SC2 you'll start seeing their fans buying new hardware to move over as well. And the specs aren't that bad if you play it on min settings, which still looks alot better than Sc1.

Meh what a complete bullshit article.

People really thought Koreans immediately dig into Starcraft 2 because they play Starcraft 1?
Because people would start watching Football 2 instead of Football 1 once it comes out right?

No, not exactly. On top of that KeSPA and co. try to suppress SC1 progamers by removing their pro gaming licenses, deleting their track history and the like if they stop playing SC1.

It sure hasn't really been successful, yet.
Just today the second GSL tournament came to an end with a price pool above 125000$ and many SC2 progamers who left the SC1 scene took part in it. Even some of the most famous ones. The interest is growing and one day SC2 will surpass SC1 in Korea, too.
That'll of course take quite a few years but that's to be expected.

A few things here;

Firstly, Starcraft:Brood War is very heavily established in South Korea, to expect SC2 to overtake it in its first year of release is at best naive and at worst, utterly stupid, you wouldn't expect to replace football or cricket with new sports over the course of a few months would you?

Secondly, it took SC:BW several years to attain the level of popularity it has now, in those terms SC2 is already way ahead of its predecessor on a global scale and its professional scene is waaaaaaaaaay ahead in viewership and the skll and profile of its competitors (compared to the oricinal at this point in its lifetime).

Also, why all the crowing from people over a pretty reactionary article (which is disappointing, I expect better from the Escapist)? Blizzard are one of the companies who we've come to expect very high levels of game quality from, sure Battle.Net 2.0 could be better, but its miles improved from when SC2 was in beta and is going to continue to be improved, lack of LAN is a pain but hey, if douchebags didn't pirate games then it wouldn't be necessary.

I like the idea of online battle.net, but I still think it was a huge mistake them making it so that you couldn't do offline lan.

Its clear these people are pirates, we should not have any sympathy for them
And yes, it would be quite interested the exact number of koreans who actually own a legal copy of starcraft...

And this is why they should've included LAN in Starcraft 2...once you start restricting the way a game is played, of course it's going to have problems becoming extremely popular.

I actually just played through the campaign of Starcraft 2 and then stopped altogether, once you get through the neopolitian ice cream that is the campaign, with all its extra units and upgrades, vanilla multiplayer and skirmish just seems...underwhelming.
My gosh I want ice cream now

What we have to remember is the 30million is almost pocket change to a company like blizzard. wow will get that back to them within a few months.

Dude are you serious? Blizzard is one of the few developers that truly, truly have no reason to cower from pirates. None, no justificiation at all with the profits they're pulling in, to fuck over their legitimate buyers because of pirates. Sorry, if you side with them on this one, the best thing I can assume about you is that you haven't played SC2 and/or Warcraft 3 or the original Starcraft to have a reference to how shitty this new system is.

And again, like everyone, you seem to be missing the point. Along with missing LAN, Starcraft 2 is missing a feature that should be included in every multi-player game ever. [HEADING=1]P2P and dedicated servers.[/HEADING]

This, along with the godawful popularity system alone is what keeps Starcraft 2 from being a below acceptable online service.

Also, yes, Starcraft 2 will eventually be accepted by South Korea. It is inevitable, haters, get real.
So jut because they're sucessful they shouldn't have a right to defend their work from pirates? I've got news for you, Blizzards main responsibility is not to the people who play their games, its to their shareholders, and their shareholders would be well within their rights to ask why their properties are not being proteced to the maximum possible amount. I know that's a pretty cold and dislikable stance but that's the real world I'm afraid.

And your assumptions are false as well, I have played SC 1, 2 and all the warcraft games all in their single and multiplayer formats. I never said I support what Blizzard has done, you just projected that, I understand why they've made some of the choices they have even if I don't necessarily agree with them (for the record I thought LAN should have been included but, as I said, can understand why they went the way they did).

I also get your point about P2P and dedicated servers, but they were made unavailable to cut down on cheating and exploitation, forcing the games through battle.net means that its harder for players to use hacks. I'd like to see Blizzard implement both P2P and LAN, whether or not it happens we'll just have to see, Blizzard have their own idea for what SC2 should be and what it will become and we all just have to wait and see where they go from here.

With some of the major players moving over (Boxer, Jaedong), i'm sure we'll see a shift towards SC2. We'll know that Sc2 has taken over when Flash switches and we see that his normal 'Walk out with a huge mech push' doesn't work too well in Sc2.
Jaedong hasn't switched, Boxer is already doing extremely well. I fully expect S class players like Flash and Jaedong to simply dominate if they switch.

Hell, all the oGs oldies have been.
Sorry, should have said that Jaedong was planning on switching, as quoted in the Next-Gen article. But I'm not convinced that all the top Korean BW players will successfully make the switch. SC2 is less about manual skill than smart decision making. The BW macrobots probably won't succeed at SC2 unless they change up their game.
It is a common misconception that the S class Korean gamers are just mechanical beasts. You can't get to that level today without great decision making.

It just goes to show that even with the disadvantage of older age, past (Many retired) Starcraft Brood War pros have taken all but two semi final slots in both GSL seasons.
I think that kinda proves my point. The older gamers can't keep up with the young kids in BW, but in SC2, pure speed is not as important.

Oh well, it's not like 30 mil is a big deal to blizzard anyway, what with all the money they make from WOW every month.
