Just from a narrative stand point South Park is a very strong series with few wasted scenes. I watched a few episodes in a playwriting class for that very reason. It is one of the few shows that knows how to truely build on an idea. Probably the only show I ever watched that has managed to never do a bad two part episode.

Well, they consider nothing off limits, so I give them that. Also like'em for being able to point out the absurd in alot of situations, even if I don't agree with it.

Because hey, if you can't laugh, what can you do?

Just remembered...

If you really want to see a show that is just wrong, Wonder Showzen was that. I think it lasted only 1 season, mainly due to just the things they mocked, and how they went about it

I did miss the Beat Kids though. Adorable tykes dressed up as old time-y reporters, asking businessmen off the street whose soul they feed to the corporate machine today? Priceless

People here say that South Park is bad, and then praise the big bang theory?

What in the world?

I like South Park most of the time. I don't think it was ever the best show on television or anything, but it passes for entertainment.

I can't believe the number of people on this thread comparing South Park to Family Guy. It's not like South Park did two whole episodes on how much they hate being compared to Family Guy or anything... To quote Cartman himself:

"Don't you ever, ever compare me to Family Guy, you hear me Kyle? Compare me to Family Guy again and so help me, I will kill you where you stand! Do you have any idea what it's like? Everywhere I go: 'Hey Cartman you must like Family Guy, right?' 'Hey, your sense of humor reminds me of Family Guy, Cartman!' I am NOTHING like Family Guy! When I make jokes they are inherent to a story! Deep situational and emotional jokes based on what is relevant and has a point, not just one random interchangable joke after another!"

Personally I like South Park. I like how nothing is sacred or off-limits. And they're right- everyone could stand to be taken down a peg or 12.

I see the show as rather 'hit and miss'.
The hits usually come when the episodes take a leap into the insane and vulgar (I.E- Sending an Orca into space, Imaginationland and a tidal wave at a waterpark caused by piss)
The misses on the other-hand seem to come when the episode is dedicated to taking the piss out of the 'Topic of the week' (I.E- Tiger woods cheating on his wife, AIDS and 9-11 conspiracies)

On the whole it is still rather enjoyable and provided if there's nothing else on TV at the moment (and there usually isn't) I'll happily watch even the worst 'miss' episodes because there will be some semblance of entertainment in there.

What the fuck did I just read. No, seriously Bobmus. What in the actual fuck.
See, I can have controversial opinions! (;
Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon, is brilliant at all the little nervous ticks which make his part. Some of the others are perhaps not the best, but there's a reason his character wins him awards.

it's more tolerable than some other sitcoms (e.g. The Big Bang Theory, although at my school, it seems I'm in the minority for actually disliking it).
You are not alone! I used to like it, for the first couple of episodes, but then I realised how horribly demeaning it was. Every character fit every single horrible geek stereotype and I soon realised it wasn't laughing with me but at me. For something that I think is supposed to be for geeks, it sure does enjoy insulting them. Once you carve out a couple of sciency lines of dialogue you can also see what a horrifically boring, cliché sit-com it is.

I just say to my friends "watch it and try to laugh along with the laugh-track", you soon realise just how shit the things they call jokes are.

I would grant this. There is some decent acting there. Shame about the actual characters.

Occasionally it falls flat, but personally I love it. It humour may be hit and miss, but it's a lot more sophisticated than it seems to be on the face of it. It's not hateful like someone above has suggested, and it demonises very few groups in any real way. If it does, it just do so in order to emphasise a particular ridiculous point or prejudice.

Also, The Big Bang Theory is pure comedy gold.
I would have listened to you, but then you stated that absurd lie at the end of your paragraph.

The Big Bang Theory is what Satan thinks laughter is. It tortures your ears, making you just want to end it all. The characters are obnoxious and grating, and the urges I get when I see it........

OT: South Park is alright. I prefer American Dad and Robot Chicken though.

I think South Park is fantastic. It and Big Bang Theory are two of my favorite shows. I find both hilarious. Not much of a Family guy/American Dad fan though.

The last episode of South Park I really liked was the WoW episode. What a horrific parallel to the game and what it does to some.

Now, well I don't watch it much. But I know it's gone downhill, my opinion.

Kill it, The Simpsons (Let it just pass quietly in it's sleep), Family Guy (Ohh god kill it please), American Dad, well just about anything from Fox right now. Except Futarama.

We need fresh blood in place of the giants of animation. Cause it's a stagnant pool for the most part.

It's too long for its own good: A lot of the episodes center around THE BIG POINT. They will hammer this big point home. Over...and over...and over...and over. The joke stops being funny and starts being annoying or just boring. Since they often build episodes around a single joke, it seems they would sometimes benefit from the show's length being halved.
I actually like this appraoch if it is handled correctly. Most of the times in South Park it is, because they take the joke in different directions and expand upon it. But in a few cases, like with the sexaddicts and humancent-iPad episode, they already exhaust the joke within the first five minutes but simply keep hammering on it for the remaining run time.

All in all seasons 2 through 10 were fantastic. After that the show seemed to have lost some of its subtlety, though there have been a few great ones like Major Boobage, Imaginationland, and You've Changed.

South Park doesn't hate on simply everyone, it just knocks the people down a peg who they feel are tooting their own horn.

I love it myself. One of the funniest things on TV. Just don't pay attention to its politics. Sure, it can sometimes be very good at pointing out hypocrisies, but in the main I watch it for the humour and the characters. I think their episodes focusing on just the children can be just as good as the ones that tackle current issues. I could also watch the creators talk for forever; I binge easily on their interviews.
