So I was watching the trailers today on Steam, the recent one (intro to Chaos) looks sweet. However, it suddenly struck me.

This is Darksiders, with guns.

Seriously, listen to them in their "combat mechanics" trailer.

Edit: I should have added "the sinking feeling comes from the realisation that I've preordered this"

Is that... bad? I'm kinda tired of plain shooters myself, even if they do have pretty Warhammer paint.

Also you can just cancel your pre-order :p

If that's the worst that can be said about it, I can deal with it. Darksiders was a good game. Sure the story and characterization were bland, cliched and derivative, but the mechanics and the actually game play were solid as ceramite and I think having the game set in a rich universe like 40K will help to address the problems I mentioned.

Especially since Ultramarines don't have character! ZING! SPIRITUAL LIEGE IN MAH BUTT!*

I cant speak for others but I liked darksiders. If the games like that and has a rich and detailed story then I think it will be ok. That doesnt change the fact that Im waiting till the game comes out before I even consider a purchase though.

My mouse started hating me in Darksiders, mainly because it turned into a wierd version of diablo. Clickety-click-click-click.

Darksiders was pretty good, so I don't see why this is a bad thing.
To each his own I guess.

Ah, I can understand that. The console version is actually a lot of fun to play.

I am required to hate you even if I don't mean it, but also because Phil Kelly let Matt Ward get away with it.

We'd have seen a lot less Bloody Blood-Blood of Blood Lance's Blood if it wasn't preceded by Wolfy McWolfwolf's Fang of Wolf Wolfington Wolf.

Space Wolves, pssht, Blood Angels would eat Space Wolves. And for all the visceral combat that we're being sold, BA would be a much better choice than Ultramarines. >_>

Is there any chapter in 5th edition that hasn't been flanderized to the point of parody? Ultramarines is da Uber shitz! Space Wolf wolf bark! Blood Angels are all bishonen vampires. Dark Angels are totally not closet traitors.

Does any chapter have any depth left to them any more beyond superficial characteristics? And Black Templars don't count, because Ward is ass raping them next.

Darksiders as a game was a blatant rip off of...well everything. But it did what it did well. Not great, but well. Space Marine seems the same, I wouldn't expect the second coming of genre change here. But a solid game in a rich universe is a pretty good combination to start with.

Well Mephiston turns up, and everything that isn't clad in blood-red power armor gets killed. Moriar and the death company actually have a decent backstory, and their primarch wasn't just some other idiot.

Don't worry too much about the Templars, they'd probably enjoy the experience...Tankred endures.

I was poking fun more at the ridiculous nomenclature they've been throwing around, that being said I would rather Kelly write the rest of the books. I've said this before though, pretend that each codex is an in-game propaganda piece for the army or you will go mad.

Watching the combat trailer, I sort of wonder about the usefulness of range combat. I don't see any issues in my mind, but then again I had no high expectations of the game yet. Like anything, I'll wait for a demo.

My only worry about Space Marine is...

Bad Score

The 40k Fanbois coming out of the wall and screaming it has no canon

If it gets regular people into Warhammer...then you can teach/discuss with them about such canon and such

This. Even though I don't like the pseudo-Nordic-Werewolf bullshit, the Space Wolves get shit done. Still a fan of the Ultrasmurfs though. At least they're less retarded than the Blood Angels.

White Scars, Black Templars and [troll]Salamanders[/troll] FTW.

Also, fuck Matt Ward! Guy's a hack, and I don't even play WH40k anymore.

Darksiders wasn't bad. It was just bland: very, very bland. It felt like what would happen if you told a magical game-develop robot to make a God of War clone based on Christianity instead of Greek mythology, and add in some elements of LoZ. Everything was functional, but it just felt shallow and soulless.

If Space Marines manages to impart some spark and intrigue to a bland base, then I don't think there is any reason for concern. Think of it as a saltine: it's bland and boring on its own, but if you add a little bit of cheese and some nice deli meat, then it's a pretty tasty little snack. So hopefully, basing the uninspired, but functional game in the interesting world of Warhammer 40k will be enough cheese and meat to make the cracker tasty, to extend my silly analogy some.

Overall I don't expect some sort of genre breaking master piece but I am expecting a fast paced action game with tight controls that allows me to shoot/chop/bludgeon hordes of enemies to death combined with cool kill move squences that flows well and has a good basis in the 40k universe (which THQ/Relic have shown they can do with DoW series).

So far the game looks like it will be fun so I am all for it.
