Space now terrifies me

Well, not really, but my imagination has really run wild lately with supposition.

See, I've very recently played through Dead Space and am currently playing through Dead Space 2. Now, these games aren't scary, like say, Amnesia: Dark Descent, but the situation your are playing in would be absolutely terrifying if you were not a resourceful engineer with a mineral cutter.

Along with the xenomorphs from the Alien franchise, the necromorphs are the last thing you want to encounter on the galactic frontier. Unlike here, on good old planet Earth, where we pretty much know what can kill us, space is full of the unknown, and the thought that all manner of nasty beasties could tear us to shreds on our first space colony isn't what I would have signed up for.

I mean, imagine waking up to this one morning (in spaaaaaace).

And this is before I even consider being enslaved by a master race of alien overlords.

But I love it, this sort of thing really fuels my imagination.

So, fellow eascapist, when you think of terrifying aliens, do you think of our good old friends the xenomorphs/necromorphs or something more intelligent, like say, the Predators?

I find terrifying aliens to be implausible and therefore not compelling. I prefer to think about what aliens might actually be like.

Implausible? How so? There's too much space out there for there not to be intelligent life. What's to say this life isn't the spacefaring fuck up your entire day kind?

What evolutionary imperative promotes the annihilation of random species you know nothing about? You wouldn't eat them, their biology would likely be toxic to you. You wouldn't destroy them for their resources, resources are too abundant in this universe to waste time squabbling over. If the aliens are xenophobic it's much easier to avoid us. If they subscribe to a fascist superiority of their species then they aren't advanced enough to be space faring.

More to the point violent and warlike species will probably blow themselves up long before alien races get the chance.

What i find scary is the possibility of virulent alien bacteria. What horrors could that wreak? Melty flesh viruses? Terrifying parasites? Maybe even, the awoken dead?

You're judging evolution by the way it works on this planet.

It could just as easily be something completely different in another part of the galaxy.

So, basically mind shatteringly terrifying due to them being completly foreign to you?

OT: The only thing that scares me are ghosts, but there is no such thing as a space ghost...

I am of the opinion that coming into contact with hostile aliens in the future is highly, highly unlikely. So I'm not worried.

With that said, I was actually talking to my roommate today about the idea of the manned trip to Mars in the 2030s being planned, and how the thing that would really freak me out is the actual mundane idea of being so, so far from home. And so much farther than anyone has ever been. Being so cut off from humanity. The isolation. When I think of it in my head I feel a sort of vertigo. That's what really freaks me out about the idea of space travel.

Well heres a scary thought.

If space really is infinite (like many people think it is) then everything that can exist will exist somewhere. It works on a similar principle to the monkeys with the typewriters theory. Simply put, if its biologically possible then those aliens ur scared of, will exist somewhere out there = P

For all i know, aliens could look like anything from humanoids to glowing spheres of energy, and even though it can be fun to daydream about what they might look like, it's sort of useless to do so.

The biggest scare when it comes to me and space travel is running out of fuel and endlessly drifting off into infinity.
Has a lot to do with a feeling of helplessness, i guess.

See, your idea is a very possible scenario when it comes to space travel. I've been reading up on a lot of articles, and the sheer amount of stuff that we wouldn't even think about here on earth, that is a killer in space is mindboggling.

There's so much that can go wrong.

Bleh.
That's not scary.
Things like an 'alien (tm)' stuck in the belly of one of the seven people on board a small space ship, surrounded with empy space and the anxiety that follows the sensation of helplessness that you have when you realize that one of you seven has a monster in his/her ribcage.
THAT is terrifying.
The anxiety and fears are much better than the necromorph 'Boo' jump in scares. Yeah, they might STARTLE you for a moment, but southpark already brought the value of being startled to nothing.

I know the game isn't scary, but imagine if your were in that situation. Your mind would probably shatter from the terror.

I know mine would.

Mate, if I were to be in that situation I'd be dead.
Why did he and not others didn't die?
Because he was in stasis. You'd need to be insane or terminally ill to have 'an advantageous'.... SCRATCH THAT, a beggining.
Besides, you'd know how to pick your allies becasue they can TALK and they don't try to chew on you.
An experience alone in a horor game is scary (for example, 'Amnesia: The dark descent'), but having companions with mixed loyalties is something entirely different.

And now space is totally worth exploring.
Mate, they have sex by combining minds.
Do you really want to see that kind of pornography?
