There is only 1 true space opera anime:

Memories (the first movie: Magnetic Rose)

There is an opera in space and it's an anime.
Sounds like a Macross spinoff. Music in space.

Well for what it's worth I've recently come across this...

...which is going to be headed by Cowboy Bebops director. I can just hear Steve Blum now.

PlanetES? Although not sure it quite classes as a Space Opera. It's hard sci-fi though which is quite different from most space based anime.

English dub trailer:

Planetes is one i can recommend, although it's not strictly Space Opera per se.

Really, really, really, really good anime, more about reflection than action though, very thought provoking.

Space Battleship Yamato is supposed to be good, but you'll have to make sure not to get the edited American version.
i here that is getting a remake so i wonder if it will turn out better
It's fucking awesome, I cannot recommend the new remakes enough, the Live action wasn't that bad either.

But Holy shit balls guys, they Rule 63'd Akira Yamamoto

I recommend Eureka Seven too, it was made by the same guys who did Bebop, but E7 is definitely more grounded in the shonen demographic. I and most people who liked it liked Evangelion a lot. You will want to punch the MC in the face, but the realisation that he's the antithesis to Shinji Ikari kind of makes it okay, and the Gekkogo Crew are amazing. And they surf on wind, it's cool.

BONES, YOU ARE NOT GAINAX!

... Speaking of, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

And then you've got Cyber Punk which isn't space operatic

Ghost in the shell
Psycho Pass
Akira

Oh, and then theirs Steins Gate, now Steins Gate is up there as a Science Fiction, it deals with multiple universes and is pretty awesome. It has some of the best lines in anime

Basically anything that Nitro Plus has made that's turned into an anime

And, well, it's not space opera or science at all, but Fate Zero

You should watch Fate Zero. DO NOT WATCH FATE STAY NIGHT BEFORE YOU WATCH FATE ZERO. Fate Stay night is shit, and you only watch it if you need to know what happens to Saber, which you don't, you only care about Rider.

But in the theme of Space Opera, yes, you can't go past the new Space Battle Ship Yamato.

I have a rule about Piracy, if you're not going to release it in my country then I take it you don't want my money.

Everyone's got ZUN's copyright policy as far as I'm concerned.

Some other true space opera's are:

Toward the Terra - Deals with psionic powers and government control in a space age

Heroic Age - Humans flee from a number of alien races and try to make their stand with a newfound power

Avenger - Post-apocalyptic space age story taking place on mars

Infinite Ryvius - Character-driven stories about people trying to make a living in space, but being faced with dangers

Legend of the Galactic Heroes - Probably the best example of a space opera style series. It's older but pretty epic: deals with the war between two massive galactic powerblocks and follows two young commanders in each one of those nations.

The girl who leapt through space - Sort of comedy, light stuff.

Stellvia - Coming of age in a space-school for prospective pilots. Only to be involved in an invasion of the solar system.

A recent one I enjoyed was Valvrave the Liberator. A small space colony is attacked by larger nations and the students of a module are set to fend for themselves as they discover some mysterious weapons.

I watched Gargantua recently, I enjoyed it. Not the greatest, but not bad. Mostly based on Earth, tho. Kinda.

I'll throw in for Cowboy Bebop as well.

I am salivating right now. Oh god, the cheesy 70s exploitation styles! This is just about everything I want. It looks mad.

Gankutsuou: The Count Of Monte Cristo

It has operas in space, so I suppose it qualifies.

Any scene that either:

A) Doesn't contain the main character
or
B) Contains the Count of Monte Cristo

Is always brilliant. It's a shame the main character is so annoying and unlikable though.

Never saw Outlaw Star but I have heard it was good. A Sci-Fi anime I would have to recommend is Steins;Gate. It is a really good show and I recommend the Visual Novel as well.
While Steins;Gate is one of my favorite stories ever, I'm not sure it qualifies as a space opera, entirely. It doesn't take place in space, but has just about everything else...

See:
Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that often emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in outer space, usually involving conflict between opponents possessing advanced technologies and abilities. The term has no relation to music but is analogous to "soap opera".

Nothing else really comes to mind that hasn't already been mentioned.

I'm not parotting any wikis, just giving a short description of those from what I remember. In the case of Infinite Ryvius they're in the process of learning a profession. Well I guess that's coming of age, making a living might not be the best way of putting it but whatever.

Not really space but I was very charmed by Eureka Seven.

I didn't mind Gundam 00 either. At least the first season.
