Chapter One-The First Job

3 days we had been on this godforsaken planet...but not a day more. I finally had found a job. I had relayed the information to the captain, and we were now waiting in the briefing room to be told the job, the reward, and most importantly, the risk. Pushing my hair out of my face, I leaned back. "So, cap, ready to give the information, or should I?"

[This is going to be some kind of journal reciting? Nice]

I heard the metallic sound my footsteps made on the steel floor. The air inside was pleasantly cooled, a nice change from the humid air outside. I looked at my watch. Three minutes too late. Shame. This had to be something big. Instead of the usual route, my contractor send me a message to meet him, or her. Hell I don't know, in this ship. I stood in front of the doors and they slid open.

"Alright, listen crew...." an authoritive voice said.

I was in the weapons cache, checking up all that we had. If we ran into trouble, I would really like to have weapons that actually work. All seemed up to date and clean, no risk of jamming.

I knew that we had to be in the briefing room later for the information on our first assignment. Good, it would be nice to get dug into some real stuff for once.

I walked into the briefing room.

"Well, hit me with the news then...."

"Alright, now that everyones here, I'll tell ya what the orders are. Another mystery man, not much info from the guy. There are thirty crates of an unidentified product, we do not look in the crates, we do not touch the crates except when transporting them on, then off the ship." I looked at the group, they seemed eager for another trip, "Ok so the good news is, each crate is worth 200 credits for each of us, not bad pay at all. The bad news however, is that the product is not leagal, and the man has his enemies. We have to be sneaky to avoid th e cops and constantly on our guard. Alright? Sound good people?"

I was sitting in the pilot chair and dozing in and out. I had been bored out of my mind for the last few days. I hadn't gotten to fly anywhere and my patience was beginning to wear thin.

"Ahh! When is something going to happen!! I'm so bored!"

My watch buzzed and a notice for the briefing we were to have went off.

"Finally!"

I bolted from the chair and jogged to the briefing room. The doors slid open and I walked in with a smile on my face.

"Do we have a new assignment?"

By the time I had gotten there the captain had already explained the assignment.

"Oops. Guess I missed it. Anywho, just tell me where to fly and I'll do it. I can't wait!"

"Dammit all Jessica, be here on time next time. Ask one of your comrades what the new task is. Alright, everyone to your positions, this'll be a dangerous trip, lets get it over with as quick as possible!"

Christ, this is what I get for hiring a woman, distractions and tardiness.

I stood up. "Just to let you know, Jessica, we have 30 crates of who-knows-what to ship to a planet. No one can look inside them, or touch them unless loading or unloading them. There may be bad people after us...and the cargo is not legal."

"How 'Not-legal' are we talking here?" I asked. This was anything but his usual line of work. "Nuclear not-legal or just your avarage Hop-toad not-legal?"

"Is the cargo ever legal?" I asked with a grin. "We are smugglers after all." "It seems like a simple job though" I continued. "Not much work for me." I paused. "The cargo won't explode, right? I hate it when the cargo explodes."

"Well you can send in your soldiers in to make sure nothing goes wrong. I'm sure we can do our job right guys?" he chuckle as he look at the rest of the crew. They had three soldiers or merc or whatever they were called now. Tyler stood up, and stretch, and said "Just tell us what to do and we'll do it. sir!"

"Ok, here are your orders, Jessica, start heading toward the planet Desara. Rick and Tyler guard the loading bay, you decide how it should be guarded, Richard, you guard the general ship." James hobbled to toward the control room before turning around. "Everyone else, do your jobs, and stay on your guard. Jake, come with me."

"If needed, we can clear the road." I said while checking my equipment. I had taken my high-pressurised sniper with him, just in case.

"The only thing I'm concerned of is other smugglers. Some regions are heavy with people dying to get their hands on some equipment. And I'm not much of use in space."

The captain started to convey orders. I was told to guard the general area. Guard-duty. Perfect.

"Will do cap'" I said.

Tyler nodded as he left to get his gear ready. He put on his armor that would protect him from some shots as he got his rifle and brough along extra clips. He started to walk to Rick room and knock. "Hey you ready to go?"

I saluted the captain and made my way to the cabin. When I made it I sat down and began turning on the engines. I turned on the cloaking system and began flying towards Desara.

I was the only one in the room. I preferred to be by myself. That way I could concentrate on flying and nothing else.

Geez.. the captain is such a asshat. I mean I'm the only one who knows how to fly this ship and yet he doesn't care or say thank you. He's so mean.

I felt the ship lurch as it departed. Jessica usually took off without a hitch, and her flights were smooth as well. I wondered why she'd be so rough now. Perhaps because the captain hadn't been the kindest of people against her.

I continuted my round through the ship, wondering what the cargo could be. When I don't know something it becomes my obsession. It ghosts around in my mind until I have to give in to it. Usually, during the job, I can push it away.

I pulled a bottle of water from my belt, feeling the ship's atmosphere get warmer as they left the planet.

James hobbled into the cockpit, he sat down beside Jessica without a word. He liked to be everywhere on the ship, he would stay in the cockpit for a small while, then move on to other areas. It keeps his legs moving and his mind active,

"Course set for Desara?"
