Or Space Pirates And Zombies.

Given how much escapists seem to love indy titles, I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about this game (a quick search revealed it mentioned once, in a thread about general space games). So has anyone heard of this game, or given it a try yet? Its in Beta currently and even offers a demo.

It came to my attention a couple weeks back and I finally got the time to try it. I really like it. You make your way from earth to the Galactic core, pirating, pillaging, or bribing your way through various star systems. Of course there are zombies, but the game has an actual story line and I haven't gotten to them yet. It plays out like the combat from the old game Star Control, but with Newtonian physics and multiple opponents. Ships are relatively customizable, and you have some (generally) competent AI partners to back you up. It has an RPG-esque tech development system so that you can specialize in your chosen weaponry branch. Anyway, if you like arcadey space type games with a deeper than average play system and quite a bit of playtime (with max stars at generation the game is estimated to take at least 20 hours to complete on the first play through), you should check it out.

have fun!

PS: if you know of any other games similar to SPAZ, drop me a line.

I've tried it. It seemed very interesting on paper, but I'm afraid it's just too grindy and repetitive for my taste. I know it's demanding much from an indie title, but a more focused story campaign and some more diversity in the zones would do much to improve the game. The basic gameplay is fun to be sure, it's just a bit too unstructured for me.

Still, something worth a look for indie lovers out there who happen to have a soft spot for sandbox games.

It does seemed slow and grindy. Will probably give it a try coming fall though.

Anyway, no harm in buying it, its polished, with new ideas and at the very least seem more fun than EVE at the core, even though being single player doesn't do it any favors.

Yeah I played the demo though TWICE, then bought it cause I couldnt get it out of my head. YES I know it can get a bit repetitive, but there are a lot of ships and gear to play around with.

The dialog is funny, if a bit spread out, and the game does feel slightly padded. However 2 guys made this in 2 years, its very pretty, and if you play it in smaller does maybe the repetitiveness wouldn't get to you.

Idk personally I love these types of games, all the way back on my old Macintosh, Escape Velocity, EVO and EVN, all great games.

On a side note, I have been toying with the idea of making a space version of mount and blade. However its a bit to much work for myself alone. If there are any programmers or artists reading this that have an itch for something like that lemme know.
