I want to play a videogame. Specifically, one in which humanity is faced with a threat for which they are woefully unprepared. A desperate struggle for survival, prefarably against giant monsters.

Yes, I did just finish watching pacific rim, yes it was awesome, and yes, this question may have something to do with it.

And yes, I do know there's a pacific rim videogame. But honestly...do you expect it to be good? I mean, it's on XBLA so I'll probably say fuck it and download the trial at some point, but I wouldn't count on it blowing me away.

In X-COM: Enemy Unknown you're hopelessly outclassed by the aliens at the start.
Not much in the way of giant aliens, but they're pretty scary in a kind of inexorable "Ok god I didn't realise they could move to the tile next to me in one turn!" kind of way.

If you want big, then go with Shadows of the Colossus, but that isn't aliens, and isn't recent.

I have both of those.

Crap. I really can't think of much else.
There's the X-COM shooter coming out before too long, and there's various sci-fi strategy games like Sins of Solar Empire and Endless Space, but they aren't really big on the 'giant alien' side of things.

In the Crysis series some of the mechs used by the aliens are pretty massive...

Well there's the Halo series. They never mention it directly, but humanity is pretty boned. Crysis, Crysis 2 if you want the desperate struggle part.

Gears of War? That has humanity threatened by some big beasties.

Alternatively, there are plenty of doomsday-scenario zombie games out at the moment.

Dwarf Fortress. Giant monsters will be one of many sources of epic battles. It may not be very in-your-face intense because it uses ASCII graphics (or sprites if you have a graphics mod, which there are many of) but it's very good at letting you paint a picture in your head and the game's procedural systems allow for some truly epic moments.

For instance, the freak incident in which one of my hammer-dwarfs smacked a zombie's head off so hard it flew into a zombie cow and split it in half. Technically, that's a bad thing because of the way undead work (instead of a single zombie and a cow, you know have a headless zombie and two animated cow halves, and possible an animated head albeit one that can't harm anything) but it was still pretty epic to read in the combat log.

Mass Effect.
Maybe Warcraft 3 if Archimonde counts. The final mission is amazing.

That is all I got.
