I'm gonna be getting Dark Souls tomorrow and I'll be attempting a speed run of Demon's Souls to celebrate. My fastest time so far has been just under 6 hours, and that was when doing everything. I'm hoping to at least cut that time in half. Anywho, I just thought I'd ask my fellow Escapees if they'd ever done a speed run.

Have you ever done a speed run?
What game have you done a speed run of?
How long did it take you to complete the speed run?
Did you have fun while doing the speed run?

Never really found much in speed runs. As I understand it, the only enjoyment out of such a thing would be in the bragging rights, which is fine and all, everyone likes to have something to demonstrate they're superiority to their friends/others. But fun? No.

Of course, that doesn't apply to all games. A speed run in a game that still requires you to experience it's content while doing so could certainly still be fun, but in those games where a speed run consists of bypassing as much as possible simply to get to that "I Win" screen as quickly as possible, not enjoyable beyond simply having someone to gloat to, and only then if they'll actually care about what you're gloating about.

I did the speed runs in Mirror's Edge. Took me just over an hour and fifteen minutes. It was a total blast!

I've never done a speed run. I don;t see the point in trying to speed through since I don't attribute much value to the notion of getting the fastest time. Games aren't races after all.

What if it's a racing game?

SUPER METROID

Because that just kind of what you do in that game, among being totally flabbergasted by how ridiculously awesome that game is. I'm not particularly good at it; Under 2 hours but nowhere near 100% item collection. And yes, I had fun. It's Super Metroid. It's objectively the best game ever made.

I've only managed to speed-run 2 games: TMNT Hyperstone Heist (precursor of sorts to Turtles in Time) and Banjo-Kazooie. The latter was far more impressive considering the staggering size of some of the worlds (at the time) and the fact that I would actually attempt to 100% the game.

To this day, the fastest I've managed to 100% Banjo-Kazooie was approximately 3 hours. Good times.

Well then I guess my logic doesn't hold. Usually people don't do speed runs of racing games through since they are supposed to speed runs anyways.

Super metroid is the only game i've considered it.

The first time I played metroid I just beat it. Like, 21 hours or something retarded. Second time, I played through-- not much better. Third time, I tried to find everything, play it backwards, loop around, and found shortcuts. Probably 40 hours. This is all back when I was like, 15 or something. Hell, maybe earlier.

Now, 15 years later, when I want to sit down and relax, I sit down and blast through in under 2. Its easily the greatest game ever played. I only recently learned the glitch moves-- i wont spend the time to learn to apply them all however. Too much time and effort.

I've done a couple of speed runs for games. These are the ones I remember the time it took me to 100% them:
Megaman Legends: 5 hours, 36 minutes
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage(Gateway to Glimer for Europeans): 6 hours 47 minutes.
Megaman Legends 2: 9 hours, 52 minutes. This game was a lot more challenging to speedrun and 100%.
Ratchet and Clank 2: Going Commando: 13 hours and 5 minutes.
I know I'm really not the best speedrunner, but it was still fun to do them.
Edit: Whoops, can't believe I forgot this one:
Banjo-Kazooie: 6 hours, 29 minutes. This speed run was actually a bet I had with my friend to see who could do it faster. I unfortunately lost the bet by about 10 minutes...god damn Bottle's Puzzle Challenges!

I hope you don't mind me using your post as justification for what I said earlier in the thread. I hope you're okay with that.

Recently? I don't think I have. I don't have the dedication to plan a true speed run. As a kid playing NES and Genesis games, I might have rushed through some of them once I've played them 50 times over and knew the layouts by heart. They probably weren't good times compared to true speed runs, but I'd like to think that they were feats to pull off nonetheless. Too bad I can't remember exactly what I ran back then.

I've never been one for speedruns as I'm too prone to human error due to worrying about messing up. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, but a difficult one to overcome. I have, however, done speedruns of just about every 2D MegaMan game ever (classic, X, Zero, ZX, and the Legends games despite not being 2D platformers), usually clocking in at around 40 minutes each, give or take a few minutes depending on the game itself. Sometimes I'll even go so far as to do no-damage single-weapon (buster-only for all forms of Rock, saber-only for Zero) runs just to challenge myself and be a masochist (it is possible to beat virtually any MegaMan game using only the buster, trust me). Other than that, though, there are few games I would ever dare to do speedruns of due to a lack of confidence. : \

If you ask me (which, granted, no one will), speedruns are 99% memorization, 1% muscle memory. It's the 1% I have trouble with. I know, it's embarassing.

I've found the best games to do speed runs are the first 3 Resident Evil games. I remember doing Claire B scenario on RE2 in under 2 and a half hours with no saving to unlock the gatling gun. I also did a speed run on RE1 gamecube remake in about 1 hour 50 minutes.

Nope I've never done a speed run.

I was going to beat ICO within 2 hour for trophy. But then I decided that ICO especially is not the game you should speed through; it's most enjoyable if you take your time with it. Besides, the controls haven't been refined in HD and I would really hate Yorda if I did start a speed run.

Never done a speed run. I'm too slow going, i love to go around finding every little thing and getting all the best stuff. Even when i've done it before.

This is also me. I just can't help trying to get into every little nook and cranny. Speed runs hold no fun for me but I will admit it's impressive for those who can do them. It takes more focus than I have!
