I was wondering if a cop has a radar gun and you are speeding but he doesn't wave you over or pull you over can he still write you a ticket? I'm in Massachusetts btw

It is my understanding that he has to stop you in order to give you the ticket.

If it's a roadside camera or a camera in a van then they can issue tickets without a stop as they get your photo.

If it's just a cop with a handheld radar then they have to stop you as the gun merely reads out a speed on the rear..........a speed that's probably wrong anyway seeing as it's poorly designed and hideously flawed. They once timed a brick wall at 26mph using a standard issue handheld unit!

I love the new average speed cameras, they face towards you, and motorcycles don't have front numberplates. Although I'm pretty sure they'd call out units to stop an 'unidentified vehicle' travelling at 160mph!!

Probably depends on where you live. In BC a ticket has to be served in person, but there's nothing that says it has to be served in person immediately, and an onwner is responsible for the actions of their vehicle, unless it can be proved that another person was driving.

So, in theory, a cop could witness your vehicle speeding, take down the details, Write a ticket, go to your house, and issue the ticket to you there, several hours later.

This almost never happens, but it's entirely within the realm of the law.

Likely, any jurisdiction that uses speed or red-light cameras has the same rules.

im guessing if he gets your license plate, then he can just mail it to you. But the only speeding tickets i've seen since i started driving are from those damn speed cameras set up at traffic lights.... So i dont really know for sure

If it looked like this, you're screwed.

If it looked like this, you're screwed.

If it looked like this and they didn't send a unit to pull you over, you're probably safe.

we have plenty of speed cameras in Arizona but in order for teh ticket to be enforceable it has to be delivered personally to you. What happens is you get in in the mail. If you don't pay it they have six months to come to your hosue and serve it in person. Since less than half of these tickets end up getting paid, there is such a large backlog of people needing to be served that you usually get away with it. Me and my wife have thrown away three tickets with no repercussions. My dad had a guy try to get him at his house twice, though.

Also the cameras only go off if you drive 10 to 11 miles per hour over the speed limit.

It could also be that the police department has received a lot of complaints about speeding, and they finally sent an officer out to monitor traffic for a day or so. You can probably expect a car out there if there is a lot of speeding along the road.

Yep.

Murderers don't have to be arrested in the act...so why should speeders?
Because Lt. Horatio Caine doesn't work for the traffic police.

What country? US? If so, what state?

If you are in Florida, technically yes they can though none really will do so.
