I'm not sure if this is overstepping the bounds but uh... there has been this series of speedrunning tournaments called I'm A Speedrunner. It's more or less casual but people race each other over Skype in single player games opposed to solo runs... though the community tend to cause abit of drama from time to time as it's a thing with them. They tend to favor PS1 titles mostly and you'll see mostly platformers take center stage but I say it's a bit different if you're looking for something a bit interesting.

Yes, I have been in a few of these. No, I have never gotten into the finals.

A number of people are talking about 'tool assisted' speed runs. I'd just like to confirm - there are acouple of different types of speed runs:

1. Single Segment
A player jumps straight into the game, from the start, and heads to the end as quickly as possible. They can use game glitchs but not cheats. They cannot reload, they cannot save

2. Multi Segment
You divide the game into pieces, and work through each in order trying to get the best possible time. A good example is halflife - you play a chapter over and over and over until you feel you have your best time, then you continue from the selected times end.

3. Tool Assisted
You can save whenever you want, script key sequences, whatever you want, as long as you can link frame by frame logically start to end.

Personally, I like 1 and 2, however I've watched Super Metroid and Genesis Sonic on style 3 and they're pretty awesome.

The Dark Souls one, 1 hour and 9 min if I remember correctly, including loading times etc. Impressive to say at least.

I got into speed runs during my playing of Duke Nukem 3D on XBL. The top 10 players on the leaderboards, anyone can actually watch their playthroughs, and I learned alot, like how to beat the first level in under 15 or so seconds, in a way Id never imagine.

Also did it some in related games, like DOOM. Never trying to be the best, just to beat myself. I never try to speed run whole games though, too much work.

I beat TMNT IV: Turtles in Time for SNES in 19:30 minutes when I was a kid (they show you total play time at the end screen) and still haven't found anyone online who has beaten it faster. Without skipping any dialogue I beat ME1 in 9 hours once.

I remember speedrunning Modern Warfare 2 in 2 hours 35 (cutscenes or loading not counted), and then my friend managed 2 hours 32. I was pissed.

It may not be that impressive but it was my first speedrun, and I could probably have streamlined it to 2 hours 10 without too much difficulty if I'd had the patience.
