How heavily do you rely on it? Despite how much I read I'm a terrible speller and I'd probably be pretty screwed posting here without it.

Because you can make a mistake without noticing it. Even if you can spell a word you could miss-spell it, perhaps by writing to fast and accidentally replacing two letters in a word. I.e.
