Why does everyone that types one word incorrect get their post replied with "you are bad at spelling." Are all people on the Escapist from the UK?
There, the Spelling/Grammer Nazi inside me is happy.

People belive (along with me) that if you are going to type something on here put some effort into it.

And no not 'all people on the Escapist are from UK' as you would so bluntly put it, furthermore what are you trying to suggest by that comment? I wouldn't consider myself part of the UK but I am and so take a minor part of offence at this.

Thankyou. I am from the UK. Why is there an apostrophe in 'get's'? That isn't time saving, that's just silly.

Personally I find people ridiculing others for simple 1 or 2 letter typos rather irritating, but when it starts coming down to textspeak i'm all in favour of delivering a concussion via dictionary.

Because this is a forum where people are expected to spell correctly so that we can maintain the illusion of intelligence, but yes correct grammar and spelling really does help reading posts clearly and is a big plus over forums wr ppl spl lk ths. Also what do you mean by saying most of the people here are from the UK, are you saying they are more likely to care about grammatical correctness, or that they are generally more clear and coherent then Americans and other nationalities. Either way it seems like your trying to insult someone I'm just not sure who.

OWWW! My eyes! >.<

The odd mistake is fine by me. The original post (and style of the OP's user name) pains me to be English.

I think it's very annoying when the pretentious and self-proclaimed "grammar Nazis" march into a thread and nitpick on the OP's writing ability. I'd consider it spam, actually.

If the original post is a wall of unpunctuated text, then the author is asking for it. However, if it's legible and the point being made is discernable, then shut up and reply to the topic.

On that note, making a thread like this is asking for it as well.

Except when you don't use periods in your sentences, all your sentences run together. You don't speak non-stop for five minutes without a pause, so why type like you do? People like to know where to pause when reading, so they don't get headaches from reading one giant run sentence that never seems to end did I get my point across do you understand how annoying this is*?

* I did that to prove a point. I hate run-on sentences in one giant paragraph of doom.

Also, I don't care if you misspell something in less serious threads. In threads where people are talking about things that require some intelligence, the more you misspell your words, the less intelligent you come off sounding.

So you're basically falling in the category of stereotypical "stupid" American. Kid, speak for yourself. I'm happily from America and I can be a grammar Nazi. Some people pride in the way that they present themselves online and offline. I type the way I speak in person. Sometimes I slip into the generic "internet speak" for the hell of it, because it comes across as common "slang" to a lot of people online.

So I just want to say: "Blanket statements are for the ignorant."

To put my comments in context I'm an English teacher teaching in Japan. As an English teacher I don't automatically fall into the grammar Nazi camp, in fact I'm fairly tolerant of exotic grammar, because if there's one thing that being an English teacher teaches you it's that the English language has a hundred exceptions for every rule.

That being said, I am a firm opponent of the (predominantly American) attitude that anything goes with spelling. I'm teaching second-language students, and they're constantly bringing me examples of the most egregious spelling errors, normally perpetrated in the mass media (magazines, television, internet, etc).

I don't really care which spelling system English settles on, although I have a strong preference for the Queen's English since it is marginally more consistent and doesn't result in quite so much ambiguity (the American English -ed, for example learned as opposed to learnt, is particularly irritating), however spelling must be consistent if English wishes to continue to grow as an international language.

Consider this the next time you feel inclined to take a short-cut. Would you rather save 1/20th of a second now by typing u instead of you, or would you prefer to spend a few years of your life learning a new language when English is supplanted as the global medium for communication because no-one but first-language speakers can make head or tail of it.

Not really to do with where you're from. It is possible to be from England and stupid. Trust me, I see it all the time.

Just like it's possible to be from America and smart, or from America and stupid.
