I've discussed something similar to this before, in one of nilcypher's News articles. Lemme pull that up.

I'm going to disagree with the article. Not the findings, which I believe entirely accurate, but the undercurrent of "Everything is under control." Texting does indeed promote communication, and as a textual medium, also promotes a form of literacy.

The problem lies in where this form of literacy is applicable. While the texting proves that the children were quite linguistically capable of analysis, but were doing so in a format that was unusual for the material. Supplant that into a formal setting and a strong resume with good information and positive references will instantly become a weak resume due to the informal language.

Formality and grammar supplant the (albeit misleading) connotation of intelligence, and practiced art that will be entirely missing if not practiced. Without backing in MLA, an essay would be graded equally if they were weak in content or weak in grammar. A journalist would not be published if s/he is not strong in AP-style.

Without formal grammar, those who cannot deviate from the texting language will be deemed unintelligent. That is where the problem in texting lies, not in literacy. Sadly, presentation has as strong an importance as intelligence in modern society.
That type of spelling and grammar undermines your ability to appear intelligent and provide reasonably fairly-judged responses, it needs to have an adequate level of formal style and proper grammar and spelling.

The reason I'm a grammar nazi is because people who can't express their feelings or opinions clearly tend to be very annoying. Not sure about all the other grammar nazis, but I have my reasons.

Improper grammar can also result in someone not understanding your intentions or the sentence coming off as offensive.

You want to avoid all the confusion you can. Especially when it comes to misunderstandings.

At The Escapist, people appreciate a higher standard of spelling and grammar. Don't use leet speak, put your posts through a text editor, and proofread them at least once and you'll be fine (mostly).

So you're basically falling in the category of stereotypical "stupid" American. Kid, speak for yourself. I'm happily from America and I can be a grammar Nazi. Some people pride in the way that they present themselves online and offline. I type the way I speak in person. Sometimes I slip into the generic "internet speak" for the hell of it, because it comes across as common "slang" to a lot of people online.

So I just want to say: "Blanket statements are for the ignorant."

How swell. There seems to be a wave of people coming to this site with little concern of using proper English. I'm no grammar Nazi, but when people don't even try to spell correctly or try to write with passable sentence structure, it annoys me.

Kids like the OP make me think the future is doomed. I hope his application forms read better than his posts. Even McDonalds would turn their nose up...

I dont slate people for spelling mistakes. We can all be in a hurry but to exchange ideas we have to be clear in what we are saying, hence proper grammar.

Not leet speak and no punctuation.

I'm sorry, I must have missed a part of life where it's optional to be understood correctly.

Whenever I see something spelled bad it fills me with large amounts of rage because it only increases the stereotype that all Americans are too lazy to do things like learn how to spell. You don't deserve an opinion if you're going to be that way with things, because you just also called every American illiterate.

You're just being ridiculous and you're only hurting yourself every time you spell something wrong, because it makes everyone else who's made it past third grade question your intelligence.

If you're not going to take the time to make your point easy to read and understand, why should I take the time to read it? I don't care about the occasional spelling mistake or punctuation gaffe- hell, I make plenty of those myself- but when your post starts looking like you typed it out on your iPhone with your toes while you were tied to an exploding boiler, I'm just going to skim past it. I'm here to discuss and share ideas, not decipher l33+$p3@|<.

...ow, that hurt my brain to type.

Hi all,

I agree with this: The reason I'm a grammar nazi is because people who can't express their feelings or opinions clearly tend to be very annoying. Not sure about all the other grammar nazis, but I have my reasons.

Also thank you to the English teacher who took the time to post, it was quite interesting.

Finally iTz Br3nd3n, I think you are just being lazy to be perfectly honest. And you know it.

Alright, here's my edit so I don't sound racist or whatever. I am a 15 year old American 15 year old. I really don't care about how I spell, or if I spell correctly. It's right most of the time, so I don't worry about grammar online. Unless when I'm doing my history report. i do

There, that's my edit.
I genuinely have no idea what you're going on about.
His original post was to the effect of saying that Americans (himself specifically) are lazy slobs about grammar and spelling, and he shows particular distaste toward individuals who are normally critical of his lesser emphasis on formal structure.

He later mentions that the more frequently proper spelling found from British posts is commendable.

More or less.

Guess what: I'm also a 15-year old American! You have no excuse for bad spelling and grammar. It takes no time to type a message coherently or to edit it later.

I'm 14 years old, and I obsess all the time about spelling correctly, even in online forums (maybe I'm trying to add some class to the "pit of acid" that is the internet forum. No offense).
