Well my spellsword character is going alright, the only thing is I am using mods that give me Necromancy as an entirely new school of magic including destruction substitute spells like Deathbolts or Spirit attacks.
I tried it on console and found the best way was to specialize in dual wielding with Conjuration, bound weapons are great early on when you get the mystic binding perk to increase their damage. Enchanting is also a must and putting some points into Restoration as a minor side skill works well too, I would recommend Heavy armour because it looks cool, it also gives you more defense early on............and it looks cool(Daedric armour FTW).
