What is it with all the spiderman games - they seem to have so much promise but once it is released it always seems to disappoint, Spiderman is one of my favourite superheroes and I am always suckered into his new releases and 15 minutes later am regretting the decision, Spiderman 2 was by far the best with excellent swing controls and average combat at best - Then Web Of Shadows truly excited me as it wasn't shackled to a terrible film plot, the premise was decent yet it is delivered terribly - bad web swinging and combat and the frame rate a ps1 game would be ashamed of, I Hope that in my life I will get a truly immersive game that really brings the spidey franchise to life - but I wont hold my breath

I actually enjoyed Ultimate Spiderman and Web of Shadows far more than the movie tie-ins because they had an independent story going; being a Spidey fanboy twat I can excuse some of the gameplay and graphics issues. The first game for the PS1 was also rather nice (the one where you have to escape from symbiote Ock in the end).

Running for my life down that tunnel was also a fave of mine but that game was so un-free which isn't spiderman going lower than the 20th story meant death

Sure, but those were the olden days ;) Kinda reminded me of the first Gameboy installment - you fall, you die...
Anyway, I never really had a problem with gameplay being linear, so I suppose the game holds up fine. I especially enjoyed all the cool boss fights - come on, nothing but the best Spidey villains in the entire game! Scorpion, Doc Ock, Mysterio, Venom, Carnage...

Spider Man 2 is the best so far but the PS1 Spidey games were pretty good.

When the got rid of the awesome swinging mechanic for Ultimate it just seemed a slap in the face. Kind of "This game'll sell, so why try harder?"

I used to spend hours of hours just swinging around and doing those awesome air tricks in mid air and squeeze myself through small gaps in spider man 2.
The web control was so awesome.

Loved Web of Shadows and Ultimate Spiderman... What exactly did you think was wrong with them?
As i said comabt in web of shadows was poor and the webswinging didnt feel as good as spiderman 2 - big step backward as spidey 2 swinging was intense - Plus the voice acting is so bad and what is it with the wolverine quiz completely ruined the pace of the battle - i missed out on ultimate spiderman so i cant comment on that.

Yes I forgot about that part, the quiz was bad, the combat was good though, but I play the PC version so I have no idea what the console one is like.
Its like what Yahtzee said, once you get zip attack all other moves are obsolete

I liked the web swinging in Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man
I also liked the combat in Web of Shadows.
Also the suit customization in Spider-Man on the N64
If you come up with a good plot, all of these games can combine into one completely awesome game

Or someone could make a new and original game about some dude who's good at jumping really high and traveling really long distances really fast.

Spiderman 2 and Ultimate Spiderman weren't too bad, I thought, and the PS1 games with the symbiote Ock and Hyper Electro were pretty cool, although they weren't free-roaming, which kinda killed the spirit of Spiderman.

Still, I do think that there hasn't been a Spiderman game that hasn't managed a decent mix between awesome web-swinging, a fully free-roaming city and good combat.

Oh well, I can always hope.
