Just to clear something up:

<color=black>This is still a versus thread. 'Which is better out of x and y' counts as a vs thread.

But anyway, OT: Spiderman is more relatable, but Batman is more interesting - his motivations are so twisted, and the way he acts upon them so unpredictable, that he's a more interesting character because of it.

Before the Thread goes bye bye, my choice would be Spider-Man. Both are driven by guilt, but Spider-man earned his through his own actions. He set up Uncle Ben's death. He killed Gwen Stacy. He created Venom. He ended his 25 year marriage in a very convoluted manner. He directly caused a lot of his suffering.

Bruce feels guilty for being nothing more than a powerless kid who could not stop the murder of his parents. The only tragedy he caused was Jason Todd. Sure he might have been there with Joker and Harvey Dent, but Batman did not create them. They were already unhinged before their chemical dip.

I fixed that for you

It's Spider-man, not Spiderman.
Also? Spider-Man is the best character by a very small margin. He's more interesting psychologically.

Batman isn't a great character, IMHO, at leats in the comics (er, Bruce Wayne batman, that is).

But he's a good thing to get other characters to be great. The bat family is more interesting than Batman, but he's the one that makes the Bat family work

No, you just made it incorrect. It's still a versus thread - a direct comparison of two different things to say which you think is better. This is in-line with the forum rules and <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.112832-The-Banhammer-and-You-A-Users-Guide-to-the-Forums>User's Guide, and I was merely trying to educate those who thought it wasn't a versus thread.

On another note, I didn't comment on the validity of the thread, and contributed myself, so don't be so quick to jump to conclusions on my personal opinion.

I'm gonna say Spiderman. I may have Batman painted on my wall but Spidey's just kind of got the hero thing as a requirement, he's not doing it because he needs to feel vengeance he's doing it because NOT doing it would be incredibly selfish. So, the fact Bruce Wayne needed his folks to die to get the same motivation says he's motivated by selfish motives (at least at first) so he's kinda weaker in the heroism scale. To me anyway.

Also, Spidey doesn't routinely beat the tar out of poor people while he drives sports-cars, half the crooks he puts away probably earn more than him. And one of them terrifies people into obeying the law, one just tries to enforce it despite most people treating him like crap so... yeah. Spidey for me.

Even if Batman is cooler.

Vs. Threads: Who would win in a fight: A or B? Which is better: X or Y? These are dull, repetitive, and are surefire ways to start a flame war. All three things that The Escapist does not wish to be recognised as.

From the User Guide.
In this thread I'm asking "Which of these, X or Y, makess for better stories?"

I'm not looking for one word answers, and there have been few. I don't believe the thread has been dull, repetitive or a flame war.

Right you are, I always automatically start typing "Spiderman" after a while.

Well, there goes my input. As someone who's exposure to both is only as a fan of their movies (and cartoon in Batman's case) I've gotta say Batman still stands as my favourite superhero. In fact, up until the release of the Spider-Man movie in 2002 the only superhero I paid any attention to was Batman.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Spider-Man, bit if I could only ever hear about one of them ever again... Well, sorry Pete.
Based on only looking at films... I agree with you. Spiderman 3 cancels out Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. And 1989, Forever, Begins and Dark Knight are collectively better than Spider-Man 1 and 2. I don't think Spidey's been very well represented in film.

Your OP reads mostly as a 'Which character do you think is better and why?'. It's technically a versus thread though, and that's all I wanted to convey.

I made no comment on the interest value or quality of the thread topic - as I said simply pointing out what the user guide had to say on the matter.

Spiderman, he's just a lot more interesting, and in a way, a lot more flawed as a hero, making him more human and easier to relate to.

Batman, with prep time beats anyone. And while some find that awesome, I just find it boring. He's essentially unbeatable, and yet for some reason a lot of people seem to adore him for that while criticising Superman for being the same.

Plus, Spiderman was a fairly big part of my childhood so there's the nostalgia factor too! :p

Understandable, sorry. Probably came on a little belligerent there. Just trying to emphasise that the thread does focus enough on the 'and why' part. I know it might techically fit the description of a versus thread but basically any thread asking a question or posing a moral dilemma with two obvious answers could be consiðered as such. I thought proclaiming it a vs thread in great big honking font was a rad unnecessary
