I have been playing the Split Second demo a bit and have found it quite interesting. It has a good close quarters racing high speed racing adrenaline rush to it, but when you have that all coming at you all the time, it really loses its pizazz. Here is my review.
Game Summary: This game is, to put it simply, a racing game in the near future with huge explosions and massive destruction interfering in the race. The plot is pretty straight-forward. You are a driver for a future game show in which you race on tracks lined with explosives that during the race you can set off to destroy other drivers or at least slow their advance. You play through seasons trying to become the top driver and win the game show.
1. The Racing Aspect:
It really wasn't a very impressive racing engine. It had drifting, drafting, other racing concepts, but its not very "wowing." The drifting is quite flawed though I know it is supposed to have a "arcadey" feel to it it really isn't all I was hoping it would be, the drifts could be activated by hitting the brake and then accelerating, but when trying this it didn't feel right. It was kind of what I would like to call a cookie-cutter drift. Its exactly what you would imagine a fake drift to look like. The drafting was, ummm, I guess it was just drafting. Drafting really can't be changed much really. So really not to impressive on this aspect of the game.
2. The Look:
The look is quite stylized. It has a near future kind of feel with a very cruel feel to it, like the worlds only source of entertainment was explosions and super wicked cars. While on that topic, the cars were an interesting take on what future brands could do with the cars we already have. It like the studio looked at cars and said, "Let make it look ten years newer." They did a good job with it. The graphics are good at some points bad at others. The explosions look like explosions and the toppling of buildings looks like the toppling of buildings. The weird thing is that when you get close to a big tumbling traffic control dish, it doesn't look natural as it rolls across the track crushing cars in its path. I do admit it looks freakin epic, but not believable. Now the graphics are good (of course they do they're in HD, but its not the best top of the line graphics. Oh yeah just a side note on this, I ran my car into a wall pretty freakin hard and I expected major damage, there was barely even a scratch, they need to fix this!
3.The Gimmick
The gimmick of the game is of course the explosions and destruction. I thought this system would be interesting. You collect "power-points" to activate rigged explosives on the track. Notice how I said thought it would be interesting, at first I was shocked of all the explosives and destructible environment, but then noticed something. "What's that helicopter doing there?!?!" This kind of ruined the rigged explosives idea of it for me. The whole course wasn't rigged with explosives, they just made it seem that way by having a helicopter drop them from the sky. Now to be fair, there were rigged explosives on the tracks and you can destroy the scenery and stuff like that, but to see that they didn't rig the entire thing and just got lazy and put a helicopter in their kinda ruined it for me. The gimmick was a good idea, though it was really hard to pull off they probably did their best, but came up short. The thing that made me extremely annoyed is the fact that when an opponent uses a power point you can't avoid it, either this is a problem or I just haven't figured out how yet.
My final thoughts...
It decent its not a great game, i'll definitely rent it to see if anything get changed hopefully it does. I would not pay 60 dollars for this game since it has many flaws, right now I'm leaning more towards Blur. I hope this review has given you a perspective on what to expect. Please give me a feedback on this review, it is my first one and I just felt like making it, i'm not professional I just wanna know how it is and if I hit the major points. Thanks.
