Having finished Rage last night, I can't help feeling a bit... let down. I must say I enjoyed the game (on PC), despite some issues with texture popping. Carrying around 10 different weapons with a few types of different ammo for each felt great, kept the combat exciting and interesting throughout the game. Crafting system felt natural, vehicle sections really added to the fun, and I simply loved the AI, with the mutants using the terrain to quickly get to you, evading your gunsight when you point in their direction. Loved the voice acting and responsiveness of the NPC's as well.

But when I got to the ending I couldn't help but feel very disappointed. While the game was quite short (only 9 hours played at the end, and I did almost everything) and the story wasn't that bad overall, I got the sense that the end part was rushed in development. When you FINALLY enter capitol prime, THE fortress/city/homebase of the Authority, you barge through a few corridors, activate a few computers and BAM you won. No special endfight, just a few waves of those enhanced mutants who felt like pushovers with your new gun and advanced turrets. After the bossfight with the giant mutant in the mutant city, I at least expected some kind of huge robot, or vehicle, or simply ANYTHING BIG, but I was let down. Very disappointing really, the game deserved to end with an epic fight or something similar.

I really think they should have added in a lot more gameplay in Capital Prime, a few challenging levels leading up to a proper climactic endfight. This just felt lame, the game deserved more!

Agreed, I honestly reloaded my game save and ran temple prime again in case there was a bug or something, it was really that jarring to see credits at that point for me. I was really only starting to get into the story and was thinking about travelling from ark to ark, building an army, doing jobs to get people settled into the new world... nothing happened. Rage just kind of stopped, not really a climax or ending. I was expecting several more townships to visit.

I just finished writing this post and re-reading it I think I sound like someone who disliked Rage, that's not the case. I really liked what I got but am really disappointed with the end.

Similarly I got about 11 hours which I was actually really disappointed with considering I put at least a couple hours into messing around with the mini-games and an hour or so into racing. I played on PC too and the texture popping was tolerable but now really irritating now I know the game is over. In the back of my head there was a voice saying "just settle into the story and wait for a patch". I have reluctantly grown out of my (apparently) outdated notions that a game should be 40 hours worth of time but this was really disappointing. Now that the game is over I'm also really annoyed at the quest structure. I was perfectly fine knowing after a short time that a lot of the levels I was going to were going to be re-used for another mission (maybe in reverse) but in hindsight for the length of the game it seems really lazy.

The gravity of the final "level" wasn't even really made known, It was just set about as "OK this is what you gotta do next" kind of thing. I suppose that's not really a fair statement as the Authority were pretty much unexplored (that was something I was looking forward to getting more information about... what were their origins, who was their leader, were they worldwide, nationwide or global blah blah blah.. but they were by far the most interesting "tribe" in this game for me).

The mutant in the city, while pretty easy on hard difficulty was still the highlight for me by a very large margin it really did feel quite epic.

Couldn't agree with OP any more. Good game, disappointing ending.

Yup, ending was a huge anti-climatic let down.

Reminded me strongly of Borderlands, but without even the big alien tentacle vagina in the cliff.

"Oh man, this is the big finale! Where's the boss? I guess I gotta survive a few waves of these plasma muties first, lemme save the pulse cannon and load up what's left of my MG ammo..."
Two dozen mutants later...
"You're winner! Here, have an obvious sequel hook!"
"...okay."

...I still loaded it up again for another go on Nightmare! and I'd probably buy Rage 2. I mean, I still had fun... I just want more.

I've since run through all the Wasteland Legends (on Nightmare!) beat all the races (on Nightmare!) and punched - yes, punched - my way through all of the sewer areas. On Night- well, you get it. Speaking of the last one: if you haven't tried it, you're missing out. Especially if you have those spiked knuckles from the preorder - go actually use them!

The ending was absolute bullshit. When the credits started rolling, I started looking around the room expecting to see camera's and hear someone telling me I've just been punk'd. They didn't even give us a decent ending cutscene.

Rage has earned a place in the worst game endings of 2011, second only to EDF: Insect Armageddon for me.

just finished rage myself on PS3 and I agree with everyone else here the ending just came out of nowhere I really expected a fight with general cross (or whatever his name is) in a giant mech or something but no press button get credits I hope they aren't just setting this up for some £10 dlc with a proper ending cos I might just hate id if they did that. i really enjoyed rage and thats whats annoying i loved this game it played brilliantly and the story worked i just thought the ending was a bit early

Completely agreed, I saw the trailers for the game and got it a week after it came out. I did really enjoy playing it and I was excited for a climatic ending, I got my giant new MG and I never used it once because I was saving it for 'the last boss' I beat the ending with nothing more then a pistol with a few fatboys... I was so disappointed I traded in the game the very next day.

I'd known full well the ending sucked, was prepared for it...and it still surprised me how lame and sudden it was.

Completely agree with Xyphon. Just sat in utter bewilderment. Thought the game was progressing really well. But started to get suspicious when clayton SUDDENLY mentioned that "this is the moment we have been waiting for". Felt extremely rushed. I too didnt get to see what the BFG ammo was capable of, reloaded a save just to see the effects. Low Blow ID...

It's like you just start getting into the game, then it ends.

You have the tutorial section in the first little camp, then you get sent off for like 1 job in what I remember to be an oil drilling platform, then you get into a small quest hub and do a decent amount of jobs, next is the subway/underground bit (where I think the meat of the game will be) and there are a decent amount of jobs ...

Then 1 raid into the big bad city and game over! I wanted another 5 or 6 bits like the subway/underground bases, I wanted a 30 hour game and instead a I get a 10 hour "was that it?".

Just as you get used to where everything is, how everything works etc the rug gets pulled from beneath you and you're on your arse wondering what happened.
