Interesting. Did Squeenix ever release anything on the PC out of interest?
Last Remnant and Gyromancer are both single-player Square-Enix games currently available on Steam. Final Fantasy XI also has a PC client. Those are the only recent Square-Enix-developed PC titles I can think of.

They do own Eidos now though, and have started publishing more externally-developed games (like Supreme Commander), so I'd expect a lot more PC releases from them in the future.

Then again if I can keep the comfort of using a controller and TV to play I could continue gaming on whatever new medium exists.
I played The Last Remnant on a PC using an Xbox 360 controller. Once I was in the game, it was completely indistinguishable from playing on a console. Depending on your perspective, that could be a good or bad thing.

You're right - It even had the Xbox controller icons while using M+KB! How's that for intuitive? :p

I don't see it. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft work too hard for their proprietary IP. Granted the PC market has been around for decades. Steam makes it even more advantageous to one of the game consoles. But look at the millions of people on both sides of the debate. While they consoles are looking more like PCs, there's ease of use that consoles give. What one person plays, such as Gears of War, another person is able to play the game on the same console, no problems. On the PC, you have laptops to consider, small, mid, and top tier laptops, not to mention custom mods on any that can make the experience clunky to enjoy with friends or others.

Will proprietary hardware go away? Doubtful. Will it evolve but all three game makers continue to be gatekeepers? That, I can see more or less happening.

He speaks a lot of sense towards the end of that article, especially about the xbox live and the 360.

Final Fantasy XI comes to mind. And soon to be FFXIV, too.

I'd imagine the trend of a "home entertainment computer" is what he's talking about. A system where you can store all your music, Tivo, personal videos, and games, and access them all through your personal computer tv or sound system and on a home network. However I'm afriad the personal work/game computer will still be seperate from the "home entertainment" version

Squeenix CEO Yoichi Wada thinks that in ten years' time we may not have consoles as we know them - but you know what? He's okay with that.

There's a widespread cultural perception amongst we Westerners that Japanese businessmen are cut from an entirely different cloth - that they are very reserved, that they are not as forthcoming and open with their actual beliefs for fear of losing face, and that sort of thing. For the most part, it may be true, but you wouldn't know it by looking at Square-Enix CEO Yoichi Wada.
Lies! He's clearly called Imperial Hot, as thats what it says on the podium!
That comment just made my day.

The day i stop having a physical console and physical media to play is the day I will stop gaming. I already am not fond of DLC and the steps they are taking are rapidly alienating me. What I love about gaming is all the things that the industry is slowly trying to move away from.

The XBOX only serves XBOX Live?
Nonsense! And even if that where true, Squeenix guy, how the F would one use XBL without the console?

Oh right, on our awesome cellphones of 2015 with still tiny screens and crappy controles!
Best to chuck my PS3 and 360 right now and be ahead of the curve!

I don't even understand what the hell he is on about. There won't be any consoles because the true strength of the Xbox is Live? What? Sure, there may be more titles available digitally in the future, but I don't get the "internet penetration" business. Because we will have higher internet penetration we won't need hardware? Again, what? Whatever, even though I don't get his logic, I don't like it. The more we move away from game boxes sold in stores and towards everything working through the internet, the more we alienate people who are not fortunate enough to live in the US or UK and have crap connections with high latency. I really hate that shit and think it's really unfair and infuriating, it's like telling a movie buff "sorry, you will no longer be able to watch any movies EVER unless you have a connection that can stream blu-rays and 5 credit cards". Fuck you buddy.

He's my kinda executive. I especially like how he accused his own country of not giving western games a chance.

This though...Yeah, he's lost me with this.

I pretty sure he's talking about the cloud, where you don't store anything at your home but stream it from servers via what is essentially a dumb terminal (a monitor, interface and network connection). However, I seriously doubt that this will happen within the next 10 years.

If that's the future, so be it. As long as everything doesn't turn into MMOs and a diversity of genres continue to be developed in competition with each other, I'll be happy.

Sounds to me like PC gaming would get the same amount of love as there console counterpart...all I have to say to that is sweet.
