On the other hand, one might also argue that over the five years since FF12, JRPGs have gone "out of style," so to speak, and perhaps gamers simply won't care.
JRPGs went out of style around the release of FFX, if not before. Atelier Iris 1-3, Shadow Hearts 1-3, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Wild Arms 3-5, Suikoden 4-5, Unlimited Saga etc barely registered on the critical radar. Only ultra simple JRPGs aimed at 12 year olds (Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Chronicle) received a decent critical reception.
Well said. This game will get ntoiced because it' a Final Fantasy. Slap another title on it, and even if it was still by Square Enix people wouldn't care. In that way I feel that FFXIII is supremely over-hyped.

Having been severely disappointed by FFXII, indeed I'm not aware of anyone I know liking it one jot, I'm not getting worked up about this game. I'm sure it'll probably be very, very pretty, as Final Fantasy games always seem to be, but whether it'll be good or not? I'm going to let one of my richer, most impulsive friends who buys it on the day it comes out and plays it for fifteen hours straight tell me.

I think Wada is being a little bold with these predictions here, but I do see both sides of the argument. Firstly, Wada does recognize that a new Final Fantasy on a new console is always going to pique people's interest. Secondly, the battle system is something different while also being turn-based, and a lot of people I have talked to will not touch a JRPG unless it's turn-based.

Considering the possibility that people don't care about FF13, that could be because of the prevailing attitude here in the States. People don't want RPG's, they want blood, gore, and violence. Everybody knows that Final Fantasy will sell in Japan, and with all the fanboys here in the States, you know it'll sell at least one or two million. I have heard rumors about a PS3 FF13 bundle, so that will inflate the sales numbers a bit if its true. I think this game will his the 6 million unit mark eventually. Definitely not in a year or two if it took five years for FF12 to hit 5 million units.
He's actually very smart for putting it on BOTH consoles. The 360 and PS3 both have people who love final fantasy, so I think his predictions are pretty solid.
Agreed. Wada and Square said from the very beginning that it was purely a business decision to put it on both 360 and PS3 (in America, at least, there will be no such thing as FF13 on 360 in Japan), and you know it's going to pay off. People like me are gonna help by buying it for both consoles because we're helpless nerds who have about 10 girlfriends between us and a little too much time (which is more than can be said for people who play World of Warcraft *ZING!*).

Well I wouldn't mind. I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games personally though I've watched them being played a lot, and anything would be better than that pile of crap Blue Dragon I've been playing recently.
