Anime is nowhere near as gory as it used to be... they had a not too recent change in censorship apparently. Around the end of the 90's i believe. (about the same time anime become much less violent)

(edit)

ok that was supposed to be a reply to someone, so reply fail i guess.

I really don't understand the Japanese rating system at all. That said, my suspicion is that there is, unsurprisingly, probably some ethnocentrism at work in it.

My guess is that if a pointy nosed, huge eyed and spike haired character chops someone into pieces (little pieces) then it probably receives a teen rating. But if Marcus Phoenix does it...
Are you seriously trying to compare the graphic appearance of Gears of War to Final Fantasy 7? Mind you, I'm not speaking in defense of the rating Japan gave Gears per say, I'm just saying... even WE gave Final Fantasy 7 a lower rating than Gears.

What is wrong with Adult's Only? It is one year of age above Mature, not that big of a deal for mature adults who like to play what they want without censorship.
The problem with the Adult's Only rating is a matter of sales. If a game receives the AO rating, then many MANY stores will simply not carry it. This means that sales will be highly limited as only people who have specifically heard of the game before will make it a point to buy the game (probably via mail order directly from the publishers, though maybe online-only stores carry them too, honestly not sure).

If people can't see the game sitting on the store shelves and decide to pick it up on a whim, then that's less sales for the company. Not to mention lost sales from people walking into the local Gamestop and asking "What's a good shooter these days?"

So yeah... the AO rating is a very grim omen for a company hoping to make a good profit on this game they just spent tens-of-millions of dollars developing.

Im impressed, 43 posts on Japanese gaming news and no mention of tentacle rape. I'm proud of this forum.

I don't see the problem with gore myself, its not real, there are some tame games that are getting the adult only treatment. Having said that Gears of War was rated 18 (or was it 16) in the UK so whats the difference?

Its no more strange than the puritanical Americans who have no problems with shootings, violence and death on their major TV networks but heaven forbid we see a titty or some one says "shit"...

And they think the Brits are stuffy and uptight?

"Extreme Edges will be in charge of putting out all of Square-Enix's CERO D (17+) and CERO Z games from here on out, like Activision's upcoming Blur and Singularity."

I never knew Blur's violence was on par with Gears of War or Modern Warfare 2...

I'm frankly appalled at the amount of generalising of the Japanese people in this thread. Yes, a Japanese company made RapeLay. Doesn't mean that every single Japanese person plays it and finds it morally acceptable.
I don't think that people are generalising the Japanese asuch, more so just commenting on the unusual standards it has when it comes to rating games. Well, and a little bit of generalising :)
Exactly what unusual standards are those? Rapelay is AO.. so GoW will be too, why is it unusual to say "Rape is for adults only, so is killing lots of people violently".. seems to make sense to me :S
Apologies if I misinterpreted something, I got the impression that a lot of violent games simply were not available in Japan due to blood and gore, whereas games such as Raplay are available. Those were the unusual standards I was talking about, I am not too knowledgeable on the area though so I presume I am mistaken.

DAMMIT, Ninja'd by the staff! I wanted to make a Tim Langdell joke... You've upset me now, John :(. No more cookies for you...
They took my jokes!
Tim Langdell should thread lightly with this lest a tentacle monster rape him.
I really wonder how much of his ass Japan would kick in court.
