SSB Melee to SSB Brawl. Why the drop in quality?

I am personally a fan of Melee far more than Brawl. The difference being, I played in tournaments and had friends over all the time for melee. I suppose it's a manner of preference, the things that really pushed me out the window were that they removed the ability to wave dash outright, and they added tripping, which is just BS. Nothing like a random "trip" to screw up your combo and leave you vulnerable to a forward smash to the face.

Yes, this is totally on subject...
OT: having played the crap out of both I can't really say that either is better, But that both are really enjoyable titles, and staples if you have either a gamecube or a wii.

Just because I feel the need to comment on this (sorry for the derailment,) why would you want another 360/PS3? You'll just end up with the same games on 75%+ of the releases. Nintendo did something to switch things up, and realized that while the 360/PS3 was appealing to a very select demographic, the Wii went to appeal to everyone. The graphics may not be as good, and there certainly is a lot of crappy games for it, but if it was just another PS3/360, all you'd be doing is making everything exactly the same, and the video game industry would become even more stagnant then it already has become in the past few years.

What they did obviously worked also, as the other 2 consoles spent millions of dollars, and tons of time adding the feature to their consoles, and I think you'll find the next generation of consoles all to have motion controls of some sort built right in. Nintendo did what it does best here, it redefined the entire genre, and brought us something that no one expected. Even if it's not your cup of tea, it's certainly an impressive feat, and you have to be able to respect that, or you probably simply don't care about innovation in games.

As I see it, the only really Melee pro types are the crazy 1 on 1 no item toruny fests at final destination. Thing is I completely and utterly find it pointless to play that way since I see no fun in that and if I want to play a real 1 on 1 fighting game or with a lot of "advanced techniques" I go Street Fighter or maybe even reach out for BlazBlue, but hey, different strokes for different people.

Smash Bros to me is all about crazy fun by screwing around with the items, the maps and your opponents and Brawl undeniably put more of that on the table. Basically, if you don't know or care what a wavedash is and have never thought of removing items from the match, chances are you will prefer Brawl, the other way around, Melee.

It might not have been on the point, I admit that, but whenever I see someone say something to do with Mario was good I have to go and moan. I genuinely do think Nintendo need to evolve past the Neanderthal stage.

There not that disimilar. I've put countless hours into both and I play Brawl more as it has more stages and charachters. Brawl was a improvement, but hardly a massive one, but it didn't need to be. There both great games.

No. Nintendo has sold more consoles this generation than either of them, and they didn't do it by making shooters and JRPGs.

OT: I like Brawl a lot more. For some reason, I prefer a Wii-mote/nun-chuck controller and I had a lot of fun in the campaign. Not to mention Link got better, at least in my opinion. I've been playing as him since we got the first SSB for the N64 and nothing will stop me from playing as him now unless they remove him from the game.
Yeah, and now Nintendo's fucked because of it.

They chose an unstable market and saturated it, then released only a handful of proper titles, the real money is in the games.

Didn't you know Wii sales have slowed to a crawl now? The 360 and PS3 are catching up, that's why Nintendo is rushing to announce this new console, with the longevity of the 360 and PS3, when all is said and done I'm sure they'll have sold more over their lifespan.

Hmm, never thought of it that way, but they could do more than just squeezing Mario and Zelda for more games that add bugger all to gaming and annoy people like me.

I just find that Brawl games play out far slower than Melee ones. That doesn't make it a bad game, but if you're used to Melee's frenetic pacing (as I was) then making the transition can be difficult.

I wouldn't say it was worse. The level of content was still all there.

The only thing is that the combat was slowed down considerably. I'd gotten really damn good at Melee ("That Guy") because I could react to the fast, chaotic nature of the game.
I normally blow chucks at fighters. Rubbish with remembering the button combos.

Brawl slowed the whole game down and made it more floaty.
There were obviously loads of other micro changes made that altered the balance of the game.
The result was that it was easier to pick up, but cut out alot of the depth from the game.
Personally, I missed the lighting fast Melee gameplay, but I know most of my friends liked the change...and...well, its a big silly idea anyway, so if any game is gonna dumb down, I think SSB is the one to do it.

It was a better party game for it, but lost it's competitive edge.

No, I don't support the Wii because I care about actual innovation.

Here are what I think are the three biggest (and most importantly lasting) innovations of this generation:

1.) Wireless controllers
2.) Proper online play and matchmaking
3.) High Definition

Nintendo went for a gimmick, and it's not going to last, the Wii has already begun to rapidly slow in terms of consoles sold, they weren't looking at the long run, just the quick payout.

If anyone's innovated this generation it's Microsoft, they came out first, they have the best matchmaking to date and Kinect is amazing (not as a game peripheral grant you, it sucks for 360 games, but the applications for PC and robots are staggering)

Meanwhile the Wii is stuck with standard definition graphics, fucking friend codes, and a number of useless peripherals they've pushed out the door that 3rd party developers aren't even bothering to learn how to code for because they know they'll go out of style in a month.

The Wii is not innovation, it was a magic trick, it was "Hey look at this! Looks cool right!? $250!" Then after a month you realize the joy of waving the piece of plastic wears off, and you're just left with a console that has very primitive hardware and nonexistant 3rd party support.

If Nintendo wants to try something like the Wii remote that's fine, but I have two expectations for when they try a gimmick like this:

1.) Don't compromise everything else (such as no HD, no proper online system, ect.)
2.) Don't make it mandatory

That is all I ask.

I preferred Brawl to Melee, with one exception: The Smash Bawl/Final Smash.

C'mon Hal, what the hell was that? You just broke any sort of balance the game had with one item.

Thankfully, like the good developers they are they kept the item toggle function.

I second this notion.
