I'm debating buying STALKER and I'm not sure whether or not to spring for it. I've seen it's gotten good reviews, but I figure I'll ask people who have played it; do you think it's worth the 20 bucks off Steam or Impulse?

Worth it.
Get it off Steam if your able. Its been patched and (mostly) bug fixed.

Graphics are a tad dated, but the audio is great and the atmosphere is heavy.
Don't expect to wade into fights and deflect bullets with your chin, you need tactics to survive.

Yes for the love of god yes!
For me that was game of the year back in 07. I bought it for $60 and it was still worth it.
I even had to restart the game twice due to two new patches that supposedly fixed everything.
Make sure you download the patch before you play! The patches are not compatible with previous savegame versions.
But, it is an awesome game that stays very true to the source material (The Book Roadside Picnic), and yes you should buy it! You should also buy the sequel Clear Sky. They are both just amazing games. They're like the "System Shock" or our generation, they really are.
P.S I plan to go back and restart it soon for the 5th time. It really is just an awesome game.

I was gonna ask if the Steam version was relatively bug free.

Why the fuck do you not own this already?

Play it vanilla before you mod the fuck out of it just so you can have an appreciation for the game before you mod it with Oblivion Lost or Lurk. Too many people play that game modded without ever giving it a run vanilla style on master level.

I rarely bother modding my games. Too much effort. Closest I get to modding is add-ons for WoW. And I'm already installing it with Steam.

Wait, modifications?
Goddamnit, then I've been playing it all wrong!

Also, I find it harder than a twelve-inch-thick concrete wall, but that could just be me.

Get the STALKER Complete mod or whatever it's called. All it does it tweak the gameplay slightly, add better graphics, and fix bugs, no changes to the story or noticeable ones to gameplay. I haven't had it crash on me yet after about 2 hours of playing it.

It's pretty much bug free now and is a great game. Slightly dated graphics without mods and just a fantastic game. It's pretty hard, even on easy. Some parts on easy were cakewalks, others, not so much. So, i suggest playing on easy or normal. Don't try hard and master, because you'll get destroyed.

STALKER SoC is totally, totally worth it. That's what I'm playing at the moment, and I've had the game for at least a year. If you get it, get the official patch and then the STALKER Complete 2009 mod:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009/

This mod doesn't change the basic game, just re-balances and fixes issues as well as upgrading textures and shader quality to that of a 2009 game. It seriously improves on the experience and I'd strongly recommend using it even if it is your first play-through. This is the polished STALKER game that it should have been in the first place. It hasn't crashed or bugged a single time for me since I installed it. Make sure you exceed the recommended specs though.

Recommended the same thing I would, that you not only get S.T.A.L.K.E.R. but grab a good mod for it.

Personally, I prefer Oblivion Lost [http://forums.filefront.com/s-t-l-k-e-r-soc-modding-mapping-editing/340033-s-t-l-k-e-r-oblivion-lost-kanyhalos.html]. It does change the game, and very much for the better.

For 20 bucks, it is totally worth it. I got it on release and even at full price I found it to be a worthy game. Just don't get too hyped and make sure you have the patches applied as others have said. It is a very atmosphere heavy game and it requires a very special playing style.

Have the game, it's alright so far, but it won't let me save. None of my attempted saves show up in the saved game list or the load list.

Are you sure it's patched to the latest version?

What you should do is get the LURK mod or the Oblivion Lost mod. These mods add a huge amount to the game, like the ability to sleep, better combat and heaps more. LURK is generally better then Oblivion Lost, and it was created by the community of 4chan /v/, and has created the best SoC experience possible. Stealth combat is redone and works great, combat damage is redone too and other huge aspects. Lurk is definetly worth it.

Here's the site for the LURK mod: http://www.moddb.com/mods/lurk

I hit the game updates icon in the options and it said it was up to date. So I'm confused. And my graphics settings and the like get reset when I quit, so I lost both my progress and my settings. And for the record I got STALKER from Steam, so presumably it'd be up to date.
