Well, if it says it's up to date, then I guess it is. The correct version should be 1.0005 or 1.0006. (1.0006 only contains a few multiplayer fixes)

Hm. Stalker tries to store its setting and saves in a folder under Users (on Vista) something like STALKER-SHOC under "All Users" unless I'm mistaken. There must be an issue with write permissions to that folder. Try turning off UAC in Vista to see if that help. If it helps, then try turning it on again once the folders have been correctly created.

I'm using Vista and never had such a problem, but I have never been using the user access control.

Is the UAC the damn thing that always ask if you want to allow a program to continue? Cause' I've been wanting to try to find a way to turn that off if that's what that is

Pretty much. You can turn it off from the "Security Center" in the control panel. Windows will ***** and whine about it (being insecure and such) but I wouldn't be too worried. (Unless you know you have spyware on your comp already.) This thing didn't exist in XP and we all lived to tell the tale anyway.

Great. Now to find the button to shut it off. Have the security center up. Where's the damn button. Would have been nice if exceptions could have been added.

Sorry. My mistake. There is an indicator of UAC in the Security Center, but the option to turn it off is under "User Accounts". Official M$ knowledge base here:
