I just bought both these games and was wondering which was better so I could decide which to play first.

So, which of these JRPGs is superior? LET THE RABID DEBATE COMMENCIFICATE!

I am of the opinion that Star Ocean 2 was the only good Star Ocean. The first one was boring and the third and fourth titles I couldn't play for more than an hour because I hate the 3D anime style it had. As I learned, the fourth title was especially bad because of the dialogue and voice acting.

I guess Tales of the Abyss, but my only experience with Tales has been Phantasia, which was actually pretty good.

They're both good games, both have good characters, really good writing, and stories that I haven't really seen elsewhere. Personally I'd go with Tales of the Abyss just because if you want to 100% Star Ocean you will be spending a good deal more time and works better if you space it out a bit.

Well, since I actually haven't played Star Ocean 3 yet (I own it, and I plan to), my opinion might not be worth much.

That said, I'm a little over halfway through Tales of the Abyss and I love it. Especially after we not only figure out why Luke is a whiny ***** (it's actually a surprisingly good reason), but he gets a richly-deserved emotional smackdown and takes it upon himself to improve.

Like stated in some of the above posts Star Ocean 3 is a lot longer than ToTA. But, to tell the truth both games are fantastic. I'd just flip a coin, you can't go wrong either way.

I've only played Abyss between the two, and I loved it. Luke starts off as one of the most annoying protagonists in any game but they give him a great character arc. It has a great story and some really memorable characters.

I actually Just started abyss and Luke does seem really annoying, but I can see a lot of room for growth, I just met Tear who is already a thousand times more compelling than the protagonist.

How long can I expect Tales to be? and should I bother with all the side quests and such on the first playthrough?

Tales of the Abyss. Now that I look at Star Ocean 3, it hasn't aged well...at all.

The Com bat is clunky, the environments are generic ( Up until the plot twist).

Wait a minute...HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!

never mind, just had a bit of fridge brilliance. Anyway, I'd say Tales of the Abyss, as you can never really go wrong with a Tales game. Star Ocean is an okay game, but takes a bit of patience getting used too. Besides, everything only gets interesting until disc 2

You haven't gotten Jade, yet? If Tear is a thousand times more compelling than Luke (who will make sense and will improve, trust me), then Jade Curtiss is a religious figure.

It can get pretty long but most of the sides quests aren't that annoying while I found some to be not worth it. Though if your anything like me a good hour of the game will be spend trying to figure out where to go when using a boat.

Well it took me about 50 hours if I remember correctly and I didn't do everything you could do in the game. Star Ocean 3 took me 80 hours...just for the main quest. I think my final time was around 120 and I didn't even do everything. Both games are above average length but ToTA is the shorter of the two.

I love all the Star ocean games, though I"m not quite sure which one ToEoT is
Till the end of time, where you go on a universe wide romp to save said universe, only to find out its all just a game, and you are being deleted, then you find out you and your sister have genes inscribed with computer code that lets you do freaky epic magic
