I really should try this function out. I have just been playing Human. That's right people, I am in the Beta. Ask me things!
Can you walk around in ships?

Can multiple players crew a ship?

Is space combat awesome?
No.

No.

Oh dear god yes it looks like the Dominion War in DS9.
Clarification: You 'can' walk around your bridge, and Cryptic wants to add additional areas in patches later.
Can't you only walk around your bridge in certain missions?
Cryptic said that they wanted the bridge to be the place where a player can feel at home and show off to other players. This made me believe you can have other Captains visit your bridge, if only to walk around.

(Oh my god someone teach me how to kill a quote tree!)

So, you are not actually playing in the Beta? I am, and I have NOT been able to walk around my bridge.

No, no entrance just yet in the beta. However, I do have a link to the article in question:

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/352/feature/3792/Star-Trek-Online-Bridges-Bridge-Officers-Preview.html

First paragraph details how bridges will be available at launch. There might be more info out there.

Not all features are ever included in a beta, probably because they are still being worked on during the beta, though it could be added in a patch in some time. Keep your fingers crossed. Having other players visit your bridge to discuss pvp tactics or a raid scenario would be sweet. And the depth of the character creation is nice. I'm still feeling burned off of Cryptic's attitude to Klingons though. Hoping they do change their mind within the first year.

it makes sense IMO. Klingons when fighting a war ONLY fight a war. They do NOT explore, or help people, or take escort missions or anything except FIGHT THE DAMN WAR! Having them be mostly PvP makes sense, as otherwise their PvE would involve flying around attacking starfleet ships anyway.

I agree, the Klingons really wouldn't have a place in the exploration or research type of PvE the Feds might have. If the Feds and Klingons had equal PvE, I'm sure people would complain about them ruining the IP or something of that nature.

I never really watched Star Trek other than the new movie so I don't really know much about it, but every time I see this game I want it more and more. Would I be expected to know all the tiny little Star Trek trivia facts or am I good enough knowing who Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner are?

You don't even need that, since this takes place about 150 years after their adventures. The story will be stand-alone, but might have a slight nod to other Trek lore here and there. Most of the Trek info is passive, like where Starbase 24 is. You don't *need* to know it to experience a great game, but every little bit helps!

Speaking of nods to the wider universe, wait till you see the replicator items 'Earl gray, Hot' and 'Feline Supplement 112' and such.

This is kind of old news, but still it's good to get it out there.

Here is a basic idea of the kind of options you have.

Holy balls. I want this shit right now, if only for the character creator.

Hopefully the gameplay has enough kick to it to justify the purchase. One of Cryptic's other MMOs, City of Heroes, was the only MMORPG I ever thought worthy of subscription so I probably don't have much to worry about on that front.

I don't like Star Trek and I don't like (most) MMOs, but I just got (a little bit) interested in this game...

If the gameplay is any good, I'm in.

MAN!!!!

I hope I am not the only one that wishes that "character creator that is amazingly detailed" means more than just tweaking how a character looks. Where are the character creation options that changes your abilities & aptitudes? I haven't had fun with character creation since daggerfall & fallout (1 and 2): Those actually allowed you to customize important gameplay elements.

Each race has different traits and abilities, when you choose Unknown race, you can customize which traits and abilities you start off with.

Will it be a genuine gameplay difference or will it be +1% to hit & -2% damage received kinda thing?

For example, a Vulcan has touch telepathy, a Human doesn't. So in missions, you'll have access to different styles of finding info or fighting. Not just stat buffs.
