Anyone who hasn't been over the real Star Wars films for like 10 years is either just a manchild or a childchild. Star Wars has been dead for a loooooong time.
Yeah, Godfather is dead too. Stop liking it! If you still like it you are a manchild.

Sorry we weren't born at those times and we're not old enough to enjoy an old movie... that was popular among all age groups and only the current 40-50 year olds actually saw it on release and still remember it.
My point was that the original theatrical releases were the real stars of it all, and they're hard as hell to watch as of late because Lucas keeps releasing modified versions. I'm sure you can find them online, but good luck finding them in store. Then every single time they do something else to enhance Star Wars, the fans are just full of gripes and complaining. And it's been that way for years. I was so happy Movie Bob pointed this out that the fans of Star Wars just need to shut up and move on with their lives. Enjoy what has been and ignore what you don't like. You're never getting an improved trilogy of prequels. You're never going to see a re-release of the theatrical version. Things are never going to be the way you want them to.

Although PART of my point is what you feebly responded to. It's kind of annoying when I see kids who aren't any older than Episode 1 complaining about how Star Wars has been ruined.
I think if someone changed I loved as much as they do (I don't really LOVE star wars, I love the video games, the RPGs and Jedi Academy, but I didn't really LOVE WITH PASSION the movies), I'd be worried that the next generation won't know it like I did, and it won't be their fault. And angry.

That's how I felt when I saw Matrix Revolutions and knew it was the end, and nobody will fix it...
Well the games are easily the best part of the EU and nobody's wrecked those. As for Matrix Revolutions, don't even get me started there. That's another essay for another thread.

Not really. One sentence.

"The only good part about the entire 3 hour long movie is the Matrix, which lasts in total less than 1/6 of the entire movie." And even then you might argue that only the final battle was worth watching...

I don't care if the movies are "aimed at kids". This was still painful to watch. It reminded of the horribly obnoxious commercials that were on kids channels when I was younger. Even then I hated them. Just cause something is aimed at kids, doesn't mean you have to go make a horrible commercial for it. Anyways, the people who might still care about star wars are the teen and adult fans who grew up with the movies, whether the original trilogy or the prequels. The most a seven year old would care about star wars is possibly the clone wars cartoon, seeing as there hasn't been an actual movie in almost seven years.

I once told a star wars fan that I enjoyed the whole series. He started yelling at me. Apparently I'm stupid for liking such a "bad" movie. Movie Bob put it straight, I was a kid when the old star wars came out, I watched all of them in a row and enjoyed them.

Overall the trailer looks silly, but it all depends on what you personally like, if you like something then nobodies opinion should not bother you.

On topic: Who cares. Its a movie meant for kids.

So he's rereleasing a film that his older fans hate and have already seen. So of course ONE of the trailers coming out would be aimed at a younger audience. It's not surprising and a good business move.
And one he's used repeatedly, should definitely not be a surprise. Whenever Lucas has been doing any one thing long enough, or has a long enough gap between releases, he worries less about the already established fanbase and more about bring in a new set of youth.

Even when the original movies came out, we started off with a fairly middle ground movie. Not directed at kids, but containing enough of a serious theme with enough action and just enough light hearted humour to do alright with all ages. Then with the fanbase established, Empire Strikes Back comes along, a more less worried about taking in newcomers and as a result takes itself a bit more seriously.

But then, 6 years after the original, we get Ewoks. A pathetic addition to the serious but let's face it, the establish fans didn't abandon Star Wars because of Ewoks, and with it being the last entry for the time period, the childish aspect helped (or were intended to) draw in a new layer of youth that would go on to gain an interest in the series as a whole.

Then, decades later we get a new trilogy. The fan base is well established, any adult who is going to be interested in Star Wars likely already is, so what do we get? The most child oriented entry yet, The Phantom Menace. Perhaps upsetting a large number of old time fans, but at this point, most fans aren't jumping ship over a single release, and an entire new generation of youth comes into the fold.

And following that, you can see the movies get a bit more series with each entry, slowly easing off the intent to draw in youth as the new fans grow up, and then we end with episode 3. While consisting of questionable quality regarding acting and dialog, the plot itself gets pretty dark, with the slaughtering of children, purging of the galaxies "heroes", domination of evil over the galaxy, and so on...

And once again, years later the fanbase that still cares isn't going anywhere, so yet again, we get a movie directed to pull in a new layer of youth, who will then grow up with the re-releases of the more serious movies and join the hordes of adult rabid fans.

"This is podracing!"

...not a great selling point.

That may be true, but the Original Trilogy never talked down to them.
Oh, and the idea it needed to have kids in it to appeal to kids. No-one wants to be "little Ani"! Everyone wants to be Obi-wan! And Luke! And Han! And... the gay ones wanted to be C3PO!

while i must admit that trailer just screamed "if you're over 12 don't watch this" i must admit i don't care. Star Wars episode I is the worst of em all in my opinion and no trailer would have convinced to watch the 3D version. A 3D version of a turd is still a turd.

I don't really remember, but as far as I remember, there were only 2 deaths in this movie, Qui-Gon and Darth Maul, which is about as much as in the lion king. Considering the latter is much more emotionally engaging, and didn't ruin my childhood, I doubt the phantom menace will.
Kids don't understand movies anyway, so seeing their toys rendered in 3D is fine.

Here I was, coming to this thread with the intention of giving the OP a wag of the finger.

Then I watched the trailer.

Eh. I didn't think it was that bad.

Of course this is coming from someone who has enjoyed the prequels.

Plus, I saw the original trilogy as a kid and enjoyed it. So what exactly is wrong with advertising the movies to them?

Agreed. With a new generation comes a new opportunity to create a new group of Star Wars fans to make money off of. It worked for me and it's more than likely going to work for them.

Ugh can't we just hand off the Star Wars license to Bioware and the other EU people already? They seem to know what to actually fucking do with it.

Really? Because it's been a long time since I've seen it but I'm fairly sure in the original film a guy gets his arm chopped of and there's afair ammount of blood, especially by standards of the 70's.

Also yeah like alot of people are saying I liked The Phantom Menace when I was 8, but you know what, I had awful taste then and when I rewatched it I hated it. Same goes for the other prequels and for the originals but too a lesser extent.

Video is named "Star Wars Ep 1. Kids Featurette", so it is specifically aimed at a younger audience. That doesn't mean it's the one and only official trailer, they've released other trailers that cater more to a general audience.

I found it funnier when the voiceover said the double bladed lightsaber was unfair when Maul is clearly being attacked by 2 Jedi at the same time.

It seemed a little condescending toward children. Now I don't remember much of my youth because of all the vodka I drank back then, but I imagine I'd been pretty offended if I saw this.
