So, the movie will either be good and fans will be happy, or it will be bad and people don't have to watch it if they don't want to. Why not? I liked the prequels.

Why are people automatically assuming the new movies will suck? SW fans spent the last 10 years complaining about how Lucas is ruining the franchise but the second he hands it over they STILL complain.

All of which are entertaining if you fall into their target demographic. All I'm saying is that for all the mediocrity Disney more often than not hits it out of the park, and really we should give them a chance.

If they make it about some of the books that are way after the fall of the empire with Luke's and Han's kids and such, it could be good. Maybe.

I felt a great disturbance in the Internet... as if millions of fanboys cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I feel something terrible has happened.

Jokes aside, I liked the prequel films for what they were - Flashy action movies strung together by poorly edited exposition and almost completely carried by Liam Neeson (in the first one) and Ewan McGregor (in all three).

As long as George Lucas isn't the one leading this film, it could end up being half-decent. At the very least, it would take a lot of work for it to be the worst thing we've seen in the Star Wars universe.

I don't know what to make of this; it seems like Disney has helped companies like Pixar and Marvel. Though Disney seems to be more of a company that tells its holdings "make money, and we will help you in any way we can; as long as you make money"; from what I can tell there are creative stuffs happening (mostly slated for 2015) but sequels are aplenty in Pixar's future and Disney has helped Marvel with Iron Man 3, and seeming to take a hands-off approach as long as the above statement holds true.

Here is some interesting articles from different points of view:

I'm really on the fence about this. On one hand, there should not be any more movies. If there's one thing that NEEDS not to be modified, it's the Star Wars film canon. The games, merch, kids shows, etc. are all peripheral to movies I-VI. They can dick around with the peripherals as much as they want because to me, they're not part of the STAR WARS SAGA. You can write a Jesus fanfic, but you can't add it to the canon (the bible). That's how I feel about Star Wars. I suppose I could just ignore the new ones, but that doesn't make the problem go away. Let the good things be good and don't fuck with it.

Don't care. Star Wars as a franchise needs to just stop. No more. No more annoying merchandising, no more movies, no more 'special editions', no more games. Just stop. End it now before it gets even more ridiculous and stupid.
Quite Effing True!

Star Wars has had more beating a dead horse than a My Little Pony Zombie Apocalypse game.

As a fan of the Prequel films, I want the new ones to suck HARD. that way people will realise how good they've had it.

Well, at least you know that after they re-re-re-release the first 6 films for the 2015 launch of ep 7, they'll go back in the Disney Vault for the next 10 years. Honestly, I guess I'm the only one hoping they do either the Thrawn trilogy or the Dark Empire set (where Mara Jade shows up).

Well, after those horrible, uninspired and crap prequels, the fumbly editing and the actual renaming of the first three movies to episodes 4-6 respectively, I doubt much more damage can be done to the IP.
Wait a sec, the original trilogy has always been episodes 4-6.

I remember watching the original trilogy as boy. It was the un-remastered version on VHS (no extra shots or dubs or anything; just in their natural original goodness). Even then they were episodes 4-6. I remember asking my dad why they were called that if there wasn't a 1-3. So the idea of the prequels was always there.

I should probably go look for those tapes at my folks' house...they're probably worth a fortune as much as people value the original "unedited" trilogy

I believe yahtzee said it best, people need to slap George away from the editing desk and give him a colouring books so he doesn't determinedly destroy his own franchise so much
Ironically, I had just watched that episode a few minutes before seeing the headline. Yahtzee gets his wish. Hopefully, Disney can do some Marvel magic on it and make it awesome again.
Lucas's meddling with the series goes that far back. The original theatrical release of what is now called Episode 4 did not express that fact at first. The VHS copies were changed to reflect that.

I have the "special features" disk of one of the recent re-releases on DVD. The special feature is the original films, unedited (or restored), and it does not state the episode number. However, Empire and Jedi are called 5 and 6 respectively. One of the many theories I've heard is that Episode 4 is the only arc in the story that can stand on its own in the whole series, so that's the one that got written out into a script and shot first.

OT: The only way I will be excited for this is if they do the Zahn novels as the next trilogy. If not (which I don't expect them to), I will be avoiding this new movie beyond a rental. Disney's decision to buy Lucasfilm wasn't a creative one, but a business one. I was done giving George my money, I see no reason to give Disney that business either without them bending over backwards to prove themselves.

OK, so here's what I think is likely about episode 7

It'll have spaceships lightsabers droids Jedi Sith and the Force

It'll be set after the defeat of a totalitarian regime (though I don't remember the Empire itself actually being that bad, just one or two planet blasting psychos who worked their way up within the system, which can happen in just about any government.

It'll pander to fans by bringing back some previous characters, like Luke and Leia, due to reality writing the script they'll be old, so for the sake of fashion they'll just be minor supporting characters.

This resulting time skip will conveniently skip over some of the initial issues raised by the success of the revolution

There'll doubtless be people who miss the old empire, and hey, this is post 9/11, so the bad guys will probably be Sith-directed terrorists working to claim territories, force them to keep the old empire "traditions", and "tax" them for funds, naturally the good guys will want to stop them, but the bad guys will use Sith mind-tricks and epic lightsaber skillz to wreak havoc in "good guy" held territories, to keep the good guys in check, trying to find the sith and stop their attacks.

If I'm right, I'm kinda looking forward to it.

EDIT: I meant Sith mind-tricks, not Sith-mind tricks

well they just did george won't be directing it

OT:all in all I think this is a good thing but it may just be an attempt to beat on a dead horse some more.

Yeah, but that'll only be the movies and it'll only be for 10 years. I'd like to see the entire franchise go silent for a decade or two. Let it be forgotten and, if there is anything good to it, rediscovered as a treasure for the grandkids.

Thought one: Oh god, not another decade of whining. Disney, I will do anything if you shove this franchise in the Disney vault for 50 years until all the nerd rage ends. Please, no more bitching, it's driving me insane.

Thought two: It would be awesome if it started Mickey Mouse.

Thought three: I want some bacon. I wonder if there is Star Wars bacon... probably.

Thought four: It'll be better then the Christmas special. Say, why does no one ***** about that?

Thought five: I'm going to wait and see how this turns out. Probably badly.
